Hollows

Hollows Newsletter #8 2022

Congratulations to everyone on navigating a full school year back onsite!

This term we have already had some big changes in Hollows House. We have moved out of the Hollows corridor and have officially and permanently relocated to the STEM Centre which will be our new home for Hollows House.

We look forward to seeing our new locker bay in early 2023 which will be located right outside the Hollows Mentor Rooms.

I would like to extend an enormous thank you and good luck to Louisa Pennell, one of our fantastic English teachers and a member of Hollows House for the last 10 years as well as Kelly McGrath, who has been one of our dedicated Hollows Assistant House Leaders for the last 2 years and before that, Hollows 12 Mentor Teacher.  They will be missed by both students and staff, and we wish them all the best at their new schools in 2023 and beyond.

We would also like to say a huge thank you to Madeleine Weatherley, who has stepped in as Hollows 2 Mentor Teacher for the last 6 months and is now returning to Melba House.

In 2023 we will be welcoming new teachers to our Blackburn High School community and Hollows family: Simone Genovese has joined us to become our new Hollows 2 Mentor Teacher and French Teacher. Kiara Bloomfield has joined us and will be taking Food Studies, Health and Physical Education and Sport classes.

We have also welcomed Kim Winton and Brian Lam who have relocated from Melba to Hollows House.

On behalf of the Hollows Staff, I would like to wish everyone an enjoyable break. We look forward to seeing all students returning refreshed and ready to learn in 2023.

Happy Holidays!

Year 7 and 8 Mentor Group Activities

With many senior students off campus, the Year 7 and 8 Hollows Students have had the opportunity to combine Mentor Groups and connect with other Junior Hollows Students when completing the Mentor Program.

On Thursday one of our fantastic Mentor Teachers, Mr. Nigel Couzens, ran a physical activity session with the two cohorts.

It was overwhelmingly popular decision to play dodgeball – Hollows Year 7s vs. Year 8s!

Although Year 7 students were outnumbered, they managed to defeat the Year 8 students in a gruelling 12 minute match.

Year 9 City Experience

Beginning from Monday the 5th December, all of us year nines made our way into the city each day.  Meeting at different stations, from which we participated in an amazing race every morning of that week. This was a great way to help us further our navigation skills, and see the sights of the city, exploring the areas that we were in.

Following this, we participated in a variety of activities, from a visit to the aquarium and a cruise along the Yarra to arcade games and mini golf. There was something for everyone to enjoy.

A highlight was skating at O’Brien Icehouse. I, along with many others, had very limited experience with ice skating, but by the end of the session, which included a mini-lesson to equip us with some confidence, I felt like I was flying around the rink.

The city experience was an incredible blur of a week, and so many special memories were created. Thank you to all my fellow year nines for making it such a wonderful time, and to the staff involved in organising it.
