HAP - High Achievers Program
On Wednesday the 16th of November 9FC, accompanied by Ms. Pennell and Ms. Ivkov, left Blackburn High School behind and entered a world of carols and Christmas spirit.
The excitement began as we stepped off the train and made our way to the State Library for a self-guided tour. Soaking in the atmosphere, we stood in the Domed Reading Room, imagining future study sessions and gaining a greater appreciation of the building's long history. In awe of the magnificent architecture, exhibitions, and collection of literature, it was an enriching experience for all.
We then made our way to Melbourne Central and the surrounding areas for lunch, taking in all the little details, from the books on the wall of the food court to the talented pianist providing free entertainment.
After a short walk, we arrived at the Comedy Theatre to see A Christmas Carol, starring David Wenham, Bernard Curry, and Debra Lawrence. Climbing the many steep flights of stairs, we marvelled at the enchanting set up of lanterns and the festivities that were taking place on stage, with a small ensemble playing carols. To everyone’s astonishment and delight, the Christmas spirit wasn't confined to the stage for long. People in costume began to make their way around the audience, handing out delicious mince pies and mandarins.
The Christmas spirit was truly alive, and everyone privileged enough to be in the theatre was caught up in it, sharing some very special first moments of the festive season together.
For the next two hours, we were transported to an often gloomy Dickensian world, the darkness of which only allowed the brighter moments of hope to shine even more.
The play had it all, from song and dance to gut-wrenching scenes that left us teary-eyed or riveted to our seats, as well as plenty of comical and engaging moments. It was entertaining and captivating but also depicted the true morals of Christmas, making the audience reflect on their own actions and lives. When the play came to an end, many of us had tears in our eyes. This is when donation boxes were taken out as the theatre production had paired with Foodbank; this play opened minds, and as coins clattered in the donation box, we realised it had opened hearts too. This day was an incredible celebration of a wonderful year and transported us all well and truly into the spirit of Christmas!
We are so grateful to Ms. Pennell - whose approachable and genuine presence we will no doubt miss unbelievably next year - Ms. Ivkov and the other teachers involved in making this experience happen. Many thank yous from all of us!
