After the Party Play Success - Mrs. Laura Muranty

The Year 10 Theatre Studies class wowed all of Years 9 and 10 students with their highly emotive interpretation of the play, After the Party, written by their teacher, Laura Muranty. The enthusiastic actors played the roles of seven teenagers trying to navigate their way through the complexities of socialising in the modern world. The cutting-edge play covered topics such as safe partying, peer pressure, underage drinking and cyberbullying. Students in the Theatre Studies class worked tirelessly all term to rehearse the play, as well as taking on other production roles, such as, lighting, sound, costumes and set design.

One of the Year 10 actors, Jasmine Taylor, said, “The play taught us a lot about what can go wrong when risks and decisions are made under the influence of alcohol or the pressure from peers. The play shows what can happen when a party goes wrong and when actions can’t be taken back. Although my character doesn’t drink in the play, she feels terrible for not stopping her friend before it was too late. The play was awesome to be in, because it felt like I was a part of a bigger picture, helping educate year 9s and 10s of the dangers of partying in a meaningful and relatable way.”

Feedback from students and staff proved that the Theatre in Education play was not only relevant but something all teenagers and their parents should see.

ASX Schools Sharemarket Game 2 - Mrs. Julia Leslie

Congratulations to Tadgh Gannon, Max Donohue, Xavier Lindsay and Luke Williams (known as ‘22bigshort’) in Year 10 Money and Markets. They were our school’s highest-performing syndicate in the ASX Schools Sharemarket Game with a portfolio value of $51,330.67 at the end of the ten weeks of trading. It is interesting that of the 18,545 syndicates playing nationally, only 27% of participants ended the game in profit. The average portfolio value was $49,013.05. Isaac Joske and Brody Styles ranked second and third at Mary MacKillop respectively. Both students managed to make a profit. Well done boys for making a profit during quite uncertain and volatile times in our world.

SSV Table Tennis - Mrs. Julia Leslie

Once again our SSV Table Tennis has been very successful. Our Intermediate SSV Girls’ Table Tennis team ventured to the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre in Albert Park to compete in the State Finals on November 16th.  Congratulations to Maddi Campbell, Alicia McGrath, Tahlia Seymour, Maddi Herbert and Celeste Robinson. One of the best things to see our girls grow in was their knowledge of the game rules and confidence in their play over time.

The team played competitively and well in the split round robin, competing in three matches consisting of six rubbers (four singles and two doubles games each). There were some great rallies. The team won some rubbers, but they did not ultimately qualify for the Cross Over Semi Finals on the day. It was a great achievement to participate at this level. Well done, girls!

Our Year 8 boys’ SSV Table Tennis team competes at State level on Friday. We wish them well.
