Year 8 Science

Medical Robotics

On Wednesday 9 November the Year 7 Enhancement classes visited GTAC to design our own prosthetic hands.

GTAC stands for Gene Technology Access Centre which provides students and educators access to life science expertise through engagement with practicing scientists, contemporary knowledge and technology. We were first given a brief of who the prosthetic was being designed for, and what main function was most important for the amputee. We then split into groups, discussing and designing our ideas.

After a short break, we started to work on building a mechanical prosthetic arm which once fully completed was able to move each joint using bluetooth control.

We tested the prosthetic arm by completing a number of exercises; one being picking up and putting down different objects.

To conclude the session, we attached a myoelectric sensor to our arms which gave us the ability to control the prosthetic with arm movements.

Overall it was an enjoyable experience and one I greatly recommend.
