Conquering the Challenge

Congratulations to Lily Marriott from Year 7, who is our second student to conquer the Premiers’ Reading Challenge (https://www.education.vic.gov.au/about/events/prc/Pages/default.aspx) at St. Joseph’s College.  Lily has read 15 books, which is such a credit to her, and has been awarded two House Points, a PRC Certificate, and a $10 canteen voucher.  Lily is pictured here with our Premiers’ Reading Challenge Coordinator, Ms Celine Bush.

Book Week is almost here

The Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) 2019 Book Week will once again be celebrated at St. Joseph’s College from Monday 19 August. The CBCA theme this year is “Reading is my Secret Power”.

During Book Week we encourage all students, families and staff to rediscover their love of reading amidst the business of modern life, and rediscover the many benefits of reading: enhanced health and wellbeing, improved comprehension, increased vocabulary, improved memory, literacy proficiency, “career ready”, and much more. Aliteracy is when we have the skill, but not the will, to read; this Book Week rediscover your will to read by rediscovering the joy of reading.

Activities in the College for students and staff during Book Week include: Book in a Jar, Mystery Book Loans, Short Story Competition, Reading Room Book Reviews, Book Bingo, free books to take home, lunchtime Read Aloud in the Library, outdoor libraries, Book Treasure display, a Book Week Challenge for families, and the annual Book Stack Relay.

And there’s more…

We have two special events in September.

On Wednesday 11 September we will host visiting author, Phillip Gwynne.  Phillip writes for a wide range of age groups and is author of the young adult novel Swerve (shortlisted for many awards including the 2010 Prime Minister's Award and the prestigious Golden Inky award) and the critically acclaimed novel made into film, Deadly Unna?. During his visit to St. Joseph’s, Mr Gwynne will make presentations to Years 7-9, and hold three workshops with students to share his joy and expertise in reading and writing.

Then Thursday 19 September is Australian Reading Hour, when we will be encouraging our students, staff and families to pledge to read a book of your choice for just one hour. At St. Joseph’s we are aiming for a total of 100 Pledges, making 100 hours of reading on 19 September.  To make an SJE Pledge of reading for an hour on 19 September simply email your name to College Librarian, Ms Claire Gibson, cgibson@sje.vic.edu.au  Names will be displayed on an Australian Reading Hour Pledge board in the Library.  Let’s reach 100!  More details next newsletter.  To learn more about Australian Reading Hour go to https://readinghour.org.au/#about .
