Sports Report

State Cross Country

Macie Free, Lily Devlin, Indiana Gleeson, Taila Upton-Martin, Claudia Sampson, Olivia Lee (15yr girls team), James Bentley and Macka Gleeson all competed in the State Cross Country in Melbourne on Thursday 18th July.

For our students to get to the State level is always such an impressive achievement.  The level of competition is very tough in any sport at State however our students always give their best, representing our school with pride, and the Cross Country was nothing short of that.

Congratulations to all our students who were not disgraced in their placings.

LMR  (Loddon Malley Region) Soccer

The Year 7 Boys competed in the LMR Soccer at Moama on a Student Free Day in the last week of July.  The boys played one game against a very strong Bendigo Secondary College who were too good on the day.  Well done boys on making it to the LMR round and representing the school on a non curriculum day.

Junior Girls by Coach Suze Langborne

In Swan Hill7th August, the Year 7/8 girls footy team displayed some great football. They were a bit slow off the mark against Catherine McKillop College Bendigo and went down by only a few goals. After a rousing speech from their coach, the girls went out for the second game and kept the Mildura side scoreless. The first goal was kicked in the first few minutes by Darlene and then the goals just kept coming. It was an awesome way to finish off the day with a win.  Best Players were : Lexi Gregor, Gabby Drage, Leila Palmer, Dael Buntine, Pippa Bush.

Year 7 Boys by Coach Brock Kennedy

The Year 7 boys were very unlucky on the day going down by four points. With each quarter, the boys started to play much better however they left their run too late, kicking a goal with one minute left which left us four points behind. A highlight of the day was the sportsmanship showed by the boys and their willingness to help the girls after their game was played. Overall, it was a very positive experience and we look forward to what the boys can produce next time!

Year 8 Boys by Coach Justin Cantwell

Wednesday 7th August, the Year 8 footy team travelled to Swan Hill to represent our school. The boys played some seriously talented opposition and not only demonstrated skill but also showed some grit and determination in their first two encounters.

Against a strong Sunraysia opponent the Year 8 boys were challenged early and were saved by some strong performances in the midfield by Harley Reid and up forward by Noah Turner, they came away with a two goal win.

In their second game against Catholic McAuley College the boys were again challenged early, but through contested marks from Hugh Byrne and classy skills from Olly Poole and Oskar Smartt-Gretgrix, they again fought back late to claim a five point victory.

In their final two games against Maryborough and Swan Hill, the contributions were very even across the field and a commanding win was posted in each game. Strong performers were Darchi Clarke, Isaac Watson and Fayte Belmont-Wickliffe.

The team will now progress to the next stage on the 20th of August in Ballarat.

Equestrian

During the school holidays our students participated in the Inter School Equestrian Competition held at Elmore over three days.

Amara Hawkes, Hamish Prime, Oskar Smartt-Gregtrix and Charlie Alberi competed in a range of disciplines including Dressage, Showjumping, Handy Mounts and Combined Training as a team.

The students and their mounts presented beautifully and certainly displayed a lot of dedication, time and effort that they had put into getting their horses ready for an event like this.  Many hours of time after school and on weekends goes into working their horses to achieve the level that they displayed.

The St. Joes team placed ninth out of 21 teams which was an amazing result, with Hamish Prime the overall Champion in the 110cm Showjumping and also Reserve Champion in this event (Hamish rode two different horses in two different teams).  Amara placed forth in Games, Oskar placed fifth in Games and Handy Mount, fifth in 75cm Showjumping and Charlie placed third in Handy Mount and Combined Training and sixth in Dressage.

Amara and Charlie have also been accepted, after an application made through their Pony Club, to attend a camp in China later this year where they will learn new skills and check out some pony clubs and facilities.  Congratulations girls!

We also need to congratulate Claire Murphy on her return to competitive riding after her accident in 2016.

Here is what Claire said about her return, she is a true inspiration!

"With my horse, Gigi performing well on the day I couldn't of asked for better on Sunday the twenty-eighth of July. I came fourth out of a total of seven riders in my class. Although we are not necessarily a Dressage Combination Gigi and I, and we much rather jumping events, we did extraordinarily well for my first competition back since my car accident in 2016. I wasn't expected to ever ride again and not to be able to form a sentence of words together but I defied all odds and am still standing today."
