PE Week

Last week Cumberland students had the opportunity to participate in the basketball shoot out in the gym and bat tennis on the basketball courts during lunchtimes. The Year 6 students and selected Year 5 students also attended the Sports Awards Assembly where many of them received awards for their outstanding performance in sport throughout the year. A very big thank you to Mr Nigel Keegan for co-ordinating sport in Cumberland and to the PE team for providing such fantastic opportunities for our students.

Aitken Can Dance

During the first week back at school, several Cumberland students performed in the Aitken Can Dance competition. The talent was amazing and lots of fun was had by all involved! Thank you to Mr Ward and Miss Healey for organising the competition, Mr Forward and Mr Keegan for judging, and all the students and their families for supporting the event.

I enjoyed every moment of doing Aitken Can Dance! It was a great experience to do it for the first time. I was wearing my Taekwondo uniform and danced to ‘Up Town Funk’. I was doing hip hop and taekwondo as I added both kicks and dance moves and at the very end I broke a wooden board with my hand. During the night, we played limbo and it was super cool to see how flexible some kids were! I also enjoyed the end where we got to eat FOOD!!

My name is Owen and I will be sharing my experience with dance. I am the 2019 Aitken Can Dance winner. I started dancing when I was six. I joined a dance acrobatic class and I loved it so I started to join all the classes I could. Dance makes me happy. My dance in Aitken Can Dance was about being put down and overcoming it. I hope that I have inspired you. I couldn’t believe that I won and I was so happy and proud.

Serving Others

One of the aims at Aitken College is to instil in students a sense of service. As part of the Year 6 RVE Program we participate in Operation Christmas Child, a project run by Samaritan’s Purse Organisation. It partners with local churches in developing nations to reach out to children by providing gift-filled shoeboxes and bringing the Good News of Jesus Christ. Please see the following link for further details:

Operation Christmas Child

Wow! Isn’t it amazing with Christmas right around the corner, operation pack your shoebox is on the go. The Year 6 classes are doing an amazing job packing their very own shoebox in groups. Operation Christmas Child is when you pack a shoebox with presents in them to give to children who are underprivileged. The Year 6 students are packing a bunch of different varieties in their shoebox for all different ages like 2 all the way to 14 years old and are packing for boys or girls. Some groups included items such as small balls, stuffed animals, pens or stationery. Other groups included items like clothing, dolls, a hairbrush and toiletries. The Year 6 students have so far done an amazing job with this and should feel very proud. Maybe this year or even next year you should try this too! Now Operation Christmas Child is on the go!

What does it mean to serve others?

Service is giving your time to someone or listening to another person. This can even just be helping a friend when they are confused. This means to me that you pray and support everyone (even if you do not like them very much). Service is not about doing kind things for credit but to make a difference, big or small. People like doctors, teachers, firemen and nurses serve everyday just by doing their jobs. Things like running charities and donating to others is also another form of service. I am always wondering about different ways to serve others! Mark 12:31 Love your neighbour like you love yourself.

Doing service for people is the reason God put us on this earth. By serving others you are not only benefiting the person, you are making your heart pure. I do this activity called Junior Youth every Saturday for two hours where our goal is to do selfless acts out of kindness. We are on a project to raise money for homeless people and buy them the necessities they need. Service to me is helping people that really need it, it can be a big act or something small. You can donate to a charity, raise money or help people in need. Even just something small, like a smile or hang out with someone who does not have friends. It is that simple! Believe me, doing service is more fun than people think, and the joy that you feel after is so amazing!

Here are some quotes about service and what it means:

  • “The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others.” Albert Schweitzer
  • “Being of service to others is what brings true happiness.” Marie Osmond
  • “The sole meaning of life is to serve humanity.” Leo Tolstoy
  • “There is no higher religion than human service. To work for the common good is the greatest creed.”  Woodrow Wilson
  • “Some of our finest work comes through service to others.”  Gordon B. Hinckley

I know that you have heard about spirit filled people like Buddha, but what does it really mean to be spirit filled? Being spirit filled has many steps, such as being grateful, kind, respectful, helpful and more! But an important thing to remember is that being spirit filled is not a competition. Some ways to serve others are to volunteer, donate or create a charity, or just be a kind and respectful person and help others out in the community.

I started helping with the ‘Make a Wish Foundation’ by simply selling sausages outside the supermarket in Pascoe Vale with a couple of friends and my family, which made it even better! I have really begun to like it and I am happy to be involved. I hope that more of my friends can get into it so we can all sell and eat sausages ‘For Make a Wish!’

Serving others. Mark 12:31 "Love your neighbour as you love yourself". I think this quote represents serving others perfectly. Serving others is similar to having empathy. There are many ways to serve others, including volunteering, donating, or even doing a simple good deed for someone can turn someone’s day brighter. Just giving a bit of time to someone is enough to serve others. To me serving others can be as simple as giving back, or being empathetic to others. Serving others is not hard, it can be as simple as picking up pencils or being nice to your friend.

This term in RVE, we learnt about serving others. I think that to serve others you need to have empathy towards them and to help without being asked. It is like a random act of kindness. The meaning of serving others is to ‘Put interests of others before yourself’. This can be done by giving what you have and take for granted and give (donate) it to others less fortunate. People will never forget how you help. This was said in Hebrews 6:10, “God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them.”
