Templestowe College Visit

A few weeks ago I went with staff and 10 other students on a tour to Templestowe College.

A few things that I liked about the experience was that everyone was so friendly, and that they were really interested in what they were learning and have a huge number of different electives that I never knew you could study at school.

We saw that students worked independently and that all year levels, regardless of age studied together.

There was a general feeling of inclusion and belonging with students not being left out and learning together.

The highlight of the tour was seeing the 10-minute talk rule. This was where no one could talk for more than 10 minutes in what they call a “Masterclass”. The masterclass provides information on key skills for that session. It is led by teachers AND students. This was cool because it meant talented students could show their skills and assist their peers with their learning.

Over my time at HP I can almost guarantee I have called the teachers Miss or Sir, at Templestowe, they use first names, this helps with equality and relationship building.

These everyday things that I saw at Templestowe opened my eyes to the possibilities for HP.

Le Mana - Empower Pasifika

On Monday 20th May, students involved in the LeMana - Empower Pasifika - Project held a student led ceremony to showcase the awesome work happening in the program.

Community members, elders, staff and caregivers were invited to celebrate their learnings from the program, with students preparing a traditional Hangi meal with their elders. The ceremony also included speeches from the students, and traditional song performances.

This ceremony highlighted their collaboration skills and dedication to their culture. The College community congratulates them on the pride, effort, leadership and teamwork they have shown throughout the program.

Thanks must go to Ms Louden, and Temese and Paora from CMY for supporting this program and our students.

The project was also featured on ABC Radio, and can be listened to here https://ab.co/2X9gybb.

World Vision Youth Conference

On May 24th a group of our students attended the World Vision Youth Conference at the MCEC.

The World Vision Youth Conference is a platform for young minds to come together to build their social awareness and learn how their actions can help put a stop to global injustice. The conference unites thousands of students from across Australia every year and gives them the opportunity to channel their potential for leadership.

Staff V Students

This year’s Staff vs Students Touch Rugby match was more of a comedy show than a serious sport, because not only did the audience have a few laughs but most students who participated in the game left with a few bruises here and there which were given from their opposition, the fancy footed staff.

For instance, our best and most experienced player Tori McManus, who was playing Wing, ended up skimming (or flying) across the floor, courtesy of Mr Marks. Her recovery was swift, and the years of basketball paid off in the take down.

Another special mention for the students, we had Julia Kaitani who flung herself across the line to slide in a very successful try, although resulting in grazed knees it sparked increased motivation for the win.

If this year’s competition has taught us anything it’s that winning isn’t really winning unless it hurts during the challenges.

Some quick passes from Henry, Leo, JJ and Jordan had the staff looking clueless as to where the ball was. Mr Everett came in strong, backed up by Ms Vuong and Mr Christiansen, but the staff just could not keep up, losing to the students 1-6.

The students have come to realization that the staff will play dirty at every opportunity they get, but they need to come to the realization that the students will take this into consideration for future matches as we are climbing back up the leaderboard and closing the gap with over all scores being Staff 5 - Students 3.

Congratulations and thank you to Kaiya, Maurice and Christian for umpiring one of the most exciting events of the year the crowd was huge!
