Assistant Principal's Report

Term two has been full of learning opportunities beyond the classroom which have enabled students to explore history, showcase their performing arts capabilities, create a marketplace, celebrate achievement and engage in student voice forums to inform future learning opportunities.

As we farewelled May, Business Management students honed their skills by organising and operating a successful lunchtime market for the whole school and the LeMana students shared their learning with teachers, fellow students and ABC reporters. June began with impressive drama, dance and musical performances that were showcased over several evenings and shared with friends, families and staff.

Last Friday, I was fortunate enough to accompany our Year 11 History students to the Holocaust Museum. Our students thoughtful questioning, ponderings and attention to detail were impressive and demonstrated a deep understanding of the course material. They were treated to first hand recollections by two articulate and warm gentlemen in their mid nineties, who along with the museum staff, repeatedly remarked about how impressed they were by our students outstanding conduct, observations and manner.

Last night, our Year 12 students enjoyed an evening that encompassed staff versus student events such as bubble soccer, court games, dinner and a movie.  Year 12 Student Leaders worked alongside Senior Sub-School Leaders to organise this evening, so as to further build comradery with each other and staff. Interactions between students and staff were very warm and cohesive.

As we enter into winter, it is important to remind our community of the college uniform policy.  Uniform items include winter garments to keep students warm without the need to wear hoodies, coloured beanies and the like.  Hampton Park Secondary College has an attractive uniform with a policy that was introduced to provide students with a sense of belonging to the school community, as well as a sense of equality. The full uniform policy can be found on the last page of this newsletter.

From time to time, fashionable items tend to become popular with students.  Presently that seems to be the wearing of sash bags across the shoulder.  Students are to be reminded that bags of all types must not be carried or worn other that to lockers at the commencement of the day and from lockers at the conclusion of the school day.

On Thursday 20 June, our students and staff will participate in a book launch for the book titled “Tales of Hampton Park” which was penned by students and staff, who will receive official acknowledgement during this evening at Bunjil Place. On behalf of the community, I congratulate Mr Jeff Shinkfield for his initiative, editorial role and enthusiasm, which led to the publication of this confronting, yet engaging read.  Naturally, without the contributing authors, the book would not exist and I thank them for sharing their experiences and putting them to print.

I take this opportunity to remind our community that personal items brought to the college by individuals remain the responsibility of that individual and are brought to school at their own risk.  The Department of Education does not have insurance to cover personal items. The personal property policy is attached for your information.
