Agriculture & Horticulture

The Year 11 VCE Ag Hort Unit 2 students have been out and about, visiting the GV Water farm last week. They were met by the manager, Nick, who gave an overview of the GV Water farm portfolio (27 farms overall), the enterprises they run (sheep, beef, cropping and fodder) and the all-important Health and Safety protocols. The students then went into the sheep yards to learn how to draft (sort) sheep using a drafting race, visually assess fleeces and animal conformation, and work with sheep safely, aware of their behavioural tendencies.

The Year 11's are doing a commendable job of caring for our 5 chooks on campus, tending to them at 8:30am and 3:10pm on a roster basis.

The Year 12 VCE Ag Hort Unit 4 students recently had local Federal MP, Sam Birrell, speak with them via Teams about Irrigation and the Murray Darling Basin Plan as part of their topic on sustainable use of water in agriculture and horticulture. Sam explained how the MDBP works in a nutshell (thanks Sam) and where the country is up to in finalising the last steps.

This week the Year 12's will visit Ascot Hills at Cosgrove to see sustainability and regeneration in action.
