Mazenod Old Boys Golf Open

The Mazenod Old Boys Golf Open is back again for 2023! Round up your Mazza mates, get a team together and have some fun trying to get a small ball in a hole 350m away!

This is an ambrose event, with prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, last, closest to the pin, longest drive, and 1st without the randomised handicap. We hope to have a few other ‘crazy’ prizes as well, so join in on the fun!

If you wish to register or have questions, please email John (Keogh.john@mazenod.wa.edu.au) by Wednesday 16 August.

Please note this year, we will be at Hillview Golf course. The event will be a shotgun start. Each team will be allocated a hole to start from with tee-off at 1pm. This will enable us all to finish at the same time.

Where: Hillview

When: Monday, 21st August, from approx. 12.30pm

Cost: Pay on the day - Green Fees are ~$30 per person for adults and $25 per students.

If you wish to donate/sponsor a prize, please email John!

A bowl of chips provided by the Old Boys once your game is finished in the clubhouse. Please stay around for the prize ceremony.

Please note: Students in Year 7, 8 and 9 must be accompanied by an adult. Please read below for important importation regarding the event.

1.) This is an Ambrose-style event. i.e. – play next shot from the best shot of group.

2.) Tee off from blue tees.

3.) Each player must have 3 of their drives used as the group’s best shot.

4.) If the chosen ball is off the fairway/ in a bunker/ off the green, then the next shot must be played off the fairway/ in the bunker/ off the green.

5.) Handicaps: At the end of the game, we choose 6 holes at random and use these to create a ‘handicap’ for each group based on the group’s score over these 6 holes. Each group’s net score is then calculated: Net score = raw score – handicap. There is a nominal prize “The Socks Prize” in recognition of the best raw score of the day. There are also prizes for nearest to the pin, for holes 4 and 12, and the longest drive on hole 18.

6.) Please ensure you dress in accordance with Hillview Golf Club's dress code. Collared shirt (polo fine), trousers or dress shorts (no denim) and closed in shoes.

Footy Tipping

Round 19 turned out to be relatively straight forward if you backed the favourites but with five games being decided by less than two goals things could easily have turned out differently. As it transpired, we had 24 people pick nine winners with a further 28 people picking eight winners. Of those that picked nine, Brendan Sweeney (Class of 2013) was closest to the margin (11 points) in the Western Bulldog’s fairly comprehensive win over Essendon. Congratulations Brendan, who also won the Round 14 weekly prize, that’s $50 coming your way.

With regards to the overall leader board, Brady Rafferty (Class of 2021) leads on 120, Jeremy Logan (Class of 1987) sits second on 119 with three people on 118.

Round 20

Collingwood v Carlton

Despite winning five in a row Carlton will be big underdogs in this game having picked up a few more injuries on the weekend;

Geelong v Fremantle

Unfortunately, the way Fremantle are going, this game will only serve to boost Geelong’s percentage;

Western Bulldogs v GWS

5th v 7th - with these teams only separated by percentage.  The game is being played in Ballarat which certainly reduces the home ground advantage and GWS has won six in a row;

Gold Coast v Brisbane

The Q clash. Gold Coast at home will be super competitive but it’s hard to go past Brisbane in this one;

Essendon v Sydney

11th v 12th – Essendon has lost four of its last five games and come up against a Sydney side that are in pretty good form;

Adelaide v Port Adelaide

Having also lost four of its last five games Adelaide’s chances of making the top eight are almost over but you would still expect them to push Port all the way;

Hawthorn v St Kilda

Normally you wouldn’t have to think twice on who to tip when 16th plays 6th. I would suggest that doesn’t apply this week;

Richmond v Melbourne

Richmond did remarkably well to get over the line against Hawthorn, they will need to step up their game considerably to beat Melbourne;

West Coast v North Melbourne

While North Melbourne will start favourites, this is West Coast’s best chance of winning a second game in 2023.

Good luck and thanks for the support!
