Sun Smart
Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Each year over 2,000 Australians die from skin cancer, and more than two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime. It is the most common cancer diagnosed in Australia – and it can be almost entirely prevented with good sun protection.
Established in 1988, SunSmart is one of the longest running – and most successful – skin cancer prevention programs in the world. We are proud that our work has resulted in melanoma rates declining or stabilising in all age groups under 60 in Victoria.
Jointly funded by Cancer Council Victoria and the Victorian Government, we are famous for our Slip! Slop! Slap! catch-cry, which has expanded to include Seek (shade) and Slide (on sunglasses). In recognition of our work, Cancer Council Victoria has been designated a World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborative Centre for Ultraviolet Radiation since 2004.
We provide leadership and innovation in skin cancer prevention and early detection using a multi-faceted approach. Through long held partnerships, community programs, mass media campaigns and advocacy, we support Victorians to be SunSmart, reducing skin cancer rates and saving lives.

Life Education Program
The students in 1/2T visited Healthy Harold. They participated in the Safety Rules program. This module educates children about caring for others, seeking help and protecting themselves in unsafe environments. Students learnt about
- Identifying the characteristics of positive relationships and healthy ways in which people show concern and care;
- Strategies to seek help in a variety of situations;
- Identifying safe and unsafe behaviours, situations and environments.
The program was delivered by Life Education Victoria. They have links to information to support families about a range of topics including cyber safety, respectful relationships and health and wellbeing.

Stay Well This Winter
As winter continues, health professionals anticipate that infections of influenza (flu) and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) will increase among children in early childhood education and care services and the early years of school.
Most children experience mild to moderate illness with symptoms such as fever, runny nose or cough. Some children, particularly babies and children with underlying medical conditions, can develop more severe illness.
To help reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses this winter, please follow the tips outlined below.
How to reduce the spread of flu and respiratory illnesses
Services should encourage staff and children to:
wash and sanitise their hands regularly
avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- cover their nose and mouth when they cough or sneeze
- use air purifiers
- maximise external ventilation
- stay home if unwell and consult their GP or NURSE-ON-CALL as required
- stay up to date with their flu vaccinations.
Our service has masks for staff and visitors if they want to wear them.
Flu vaccinations
Annual flu vaccination is recommended for everyone aged 6 months and over.
Flu vaccines can be booked through GPs, pharmacies, or local council immunisation service, many of which can also provide COVID-19 vaccinations.
Free flu vaccines are available as part of the National Immunisation Program for:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6 months and older
- children aged 6 months to under 5 years
- people aged 6 months or older with underlying medical conditions.

Getting to school on time
It is an expectation that all students are in their classroom by the 8.55am. This allows teachers to begin lessons promptly, helps create a positive start to the day and builds a calm and supportive learning environment in which learning can be maximised.
Equally, we have asked students to focus on getting back to class on time after playtime. The music will go to alert students to start heading to classroom ready for learning. Thank you for supporting these key messages at home!
