Teaching and Learning

Children need to choose their own reading material to maximise engagement, confidence and independence!  We don’t want them spending too much time reading books that are too hard for them, as they will get frustrated and lose meaning, or too easy for them, as they are not learning.  When children are able to successfully choose a 'good fit' book, they are reading something that they will enjoy, at a level that still affords them opportunities to practise applying their reading strategies!

How can we support our children to independently select good fit books?

I PICK METHOD

I I choose a book - look it over inside and out.

P Purpose - why do I want to read it?

I Interest - does this interest me?

C Comprehend - do I understand what I am reading?

K Know - do I know most of the words? (less

than 5 unknown words on a page of text)

Use this method to support your child in selecting appropriate reading material.
