From the Leadership Team

We would like to extend a warm welcome to Term 4, to our Greater Shepparton Secondary College community. This will be a very important term for all of our students, but particularly for our first cohort of Year 12 students to graduate at our new site. We wish our Year 12 students the very best of luck with their exam preparation and finalising VCAL outcomes over the next fortnight.

With the commencement of the term, we would like to remind students of the expectation that they wear full school uniform to school each day. Greater Shepparton Secondary College is a Sun Smart school, and it is a requirement that students wear a broad-brimmed hat in Term 1 and Term 4. The weather will begin to start warming up very soon, so please ensure that a broad-brimmed hat is brought to school each day and worn at recess and lunch.

We are very excited that plans are progressing for our HOL (Hand’s on Learning) Program to move onsite to our Hawdon Street Campus. We are building a new structure for this program at the back of the oval near the staff carpark. The cement slab has been laid and construction has commenced.

During the holidays the Bayuna Shade Structure was erected, and it is an exact replica of the Dharnya Shade Structure. The Biyala Shade Structure is sitting with Greater Shepparton City Council pending approval, and then works will commence when the weather permits.

Themes from the Indigenous artwork that graces our main entrance have been carried through to our Neighbourhoods. Selected classrooms, the Community Hub and our Koorie Educator offices now bear bold, colourful decals that reflect the region's Yorta Yorta and Bangerang traditional custodians.

It has been a fabulous start for our ILSP

(Intensive Learning Support Program) that commenced from the beginning of Term 4 at the McGuire Campus site in Wilmot Road. Our ILSP students have been enjoying the program which consists of literacy and numeracy, Personal Development, Careers and Community as well as attending electives at the Hawdon Street Campus, and external programs, such as Physical Education at Aquamoves.

Congratulations to our students who participated in the Hume Region Track and Field Championships in Albury last Thursday. The students are not only to be commended for their representation, but also for their amazing results in bringing Greater Shepparton Secondary College into the overall first place! Full report and results on Page 2 in this Newsletter

We look forward to welcoming our new Year 7 students to GSSC throughout Term 4. For our larger schools we are holding transition sessions at GSSC on Wednesday 19th October and Thursday 27th October.  These sessions will be run by our School and Student Leadership Teams. Each of the schools will then participate in one of the following lessons: Science, Dance, Music, Foods, Sport or Art. Specific cohort sessions will also be delivered for students requiring extra transition visits to the site.

Last week the Leadership Team interviewed Year 11 students for the role of College Captain. The interviews were inspiring, and it was positive to hear the students talk about how much they are enjoying this year, the new facilities, making new friends, having greater pathway opportunities, and seeing the tone of the College getting better and better. We look forward to advertising a large number of Specialist Leadership Positions for all Year Levels next week during Home Group.
