Ethical Thinking

Over the past semester, the Year 3 and 4 Community, and the Year 5 and 6 Community have been learning about ethical concepts and decision-making. The Ethical Capability curriculum explores what it means for both an individual and society to live well. Students examine what we ought to do, how we ought to live, what kind of society we should have and what kind of person one should be.

In learning about and applying Ethical Capabilities, students at Corpus Christi will develop skills in:

  • listening to each other
  • taking turns to speak
  • building on others’ ideas
  • respectfully disagreeing
  • evaluating evidence, giving reasons for their opinions
  • carefully considering views that are different to their own
  • using logic and reason.

Last term in Year 3 and 4, the community identified and discussed the concepts of fair and unfair, and what equal and equality mean. They had to make and justify their opinions in small groups and whole class discussions.

Throughout this term, they will continue to discuss what makes actions fair and apply this to their presentation about actions we can take in our local community to their ‘mock’ local government.

The Year 5 and 6 Community have been applying their thinking to current issues in society. Last term, they discussed issues relating to climate change and how we can care for the environment. They began this by critiquing and analysing the text ‘The Inheritance’ by Armin Greder. Students used the events in the story to unpack the concept of greed.

This term, they are using the six thinking hats to unpack the current issues of social media and gender pay equality.
