African Journey Incursion:
Our sunroom took a journey through Africa along with friends from our river room! A wonderful incursion with Lamine Sonko, an African musician come out and take us on a Journey through Africa. We had drums, caxixi shakers, puppets and great dance moves that got us all in a happy mood!
Forest Room- 3-Year-Old Kindergarten
Clean up Australia Day: This term we took part and also spoke about clean up Australia Day, which was on Sunday 5th of March. Forest room discussed the importance of keeping our Earth clean and read the story 'Dear Earth' to highlight all the wonderful parts of the Earth (oceans, forests, mountains, animals, people etc) that we want to protect by keeping the planet clean. This then sparked many conversations around keeping our yard clean, with the children pointing out rubbish that they found to the teachers!
Cooking program: Term 1 in forest room was the introduction of our cooking program within the room! This has been a great addition to our program and something that all the children have involvement in a appear to really enjoy. We have enjoyed learning to cut our own fruit for morning tea, making jelly fruit cups, 'Easter eggs' which involved icing and decorating individual biscuits. We are looking forward to continuing this program throughout the year and incorporating many celebrations into the program too.
St Patrick's Day!: Forest room have also been exploring all things St Patricks Day! We started off by reading the story 'Pete the Cat and the great Leprechaun chase' by James Dean, which the children really enjoyed listening to and hearing about the different Irish traditions and tales when it comes to this event such as hearing about leprechauns, shamrocks and the significance of the colour green. We then continued learning about this event through engaging in some creative arts activities where the children were invited to create shamrocks with sponge paintings and create green themed paintings in the outdoor space. The children loved engaging in these arts and crafts activities and were able to extend on their learning of St Patrick's Day!
Field Room 4-Year-Old Kindergarten
Big chefs help little chefs – A taste of Persia and Sri Lanka! ‘Big Chefs help Little Chefs' is a program running between our Sun and Field rooms. This program is all about the kinder children (big chefs) helping out the toddlers (little chefs). The big chefs love supporting the little chefs in taking turns and mixing, pouring, and counting all the ingredients. Every month all the children will visit and celebrate a different country across term 1 they have celebrated celebrated Sri Lanka and Persia. Together the children made Sri Lankan 'Butter Bread' and the popular ‘Persian Rice Cookies’, which the children get to enjoy alongside their afternoon tea and late snack-Delicious!
Harold from life Ed: Harold and Simone from life Ed came to visit field room to discuss all about big feelings. Simone showed the children how we can take deep breaths and to talk to someone to help our big feelings small again. Harold and Simone read a book with us and shared a song with us 'Twinkle Twinkle. Simone also held up posters of different emotions and asked the children when they felt these certain emotions. This has been a great conclusion to othe PALS program and a great introduction to an emotional regulation focus next term.
Responsible pets: This interactive program focuses on teaching the children:- when dogs should be left alone- things we should not do to dogs- how can you tell if a dog is happy, scared or angry- a safe way to approach and greet a dog what to do if approached by an unknown or aggressive dog. The children learnt a range of strategies that they will be able to use in real life situations. Ask them about the 4 steps to approaching a dog and how they should stand if they see an angry dog! What a great learning tool.
Swim land: Swimland came out to visit the children in Field room and today we had two. The children got to learn all about water, sun and beach safety and all about different swimming tools such as floaties, boards and life jackets. They all practiced how to signal out for help. If we wave our hands around the lifeguards might think we are waving to say hello This is why we must make our hands into a fist and use a LOUD voice to yell out ‘HELP!’ Even Swordy the Sword Fish came out for a special visit!
