Year 4 Camp

Some Camp reflections by some of our Year 4 students...

At Sovereign Hill we went gold panning and some people found small specks of gold worth $2. We also learnt about the gold rush in the 1850s and what life was like in that time on the gold fields around Ballarat.  We learnt about the clothing, how kids lived at that time and what the classrooms were like. We also got souvenirs including posters, lollies and horseshoes.

On the first night at the Log Cabin Camp we went on a night walk. We went to see some sheep and fed them. We then walked through some paddocks and looked at the stars. On the way back, we saw a snake and two frogs. The night walk ended with cooking damper and black tea. You could have jam, honey, butter and vegemite on the damper.

My personal favourite activity that we did on camp was the ‘Crate stacking’. Will, one of the teachers who was really kind, put us through a series of challenges where you start at a certain number of crates and then build up by five, every time someone reached the given number. Being so high in the air was not easy!

The year 4’s had already completed a long day at Sovereign Hill when just before we left for camp, we visited the Botanical Gardens in Ballarat. It was a beautiful sight to see the Autumn leaves carpet the ground. We all walked towards the statues of Priministers starting from 1901. It was a bit strange to see all the faces of our past Priministers, especially since Mrs Hurley had asked us to find the one with the biggest nose!
