Swan River Sailing - 2023 College Cup

On Sunday, 30 April, six teams entered the 2023 College Cup at the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club.

The Trinity College team was represented by:

  • Phillip Edmiston Class (1973)
  • Steven Cowin (1984)
  • Liam Pabbruwe (2019)
  • Oliver Pabbruwe (2019)
  • Tom Devine (2021)
  • Celina Trinh, on behalf of Calvin Trinh (2027)

It was a much-appreciated honour for Calvin’s parents to have their daughter Celina represent him for the TC team.

Unfortunately, TC didn't make a top-three place. Scotch in first place, John XXIII in second, and Christchurch Grammar School in third.

PSA Round 1: Wrap-up

Round 1 of the PSA Winter season saw Trinity against an influential Scotch College. This fixture was made even harder by the significantly shortened pre-season that all teams had, and a massive thank you needs to go to the Trinity staff and coaches who were able to prepare the students and make team selections in such a short amount of time.

For the First team results, Cross Country had 4 out of the First 5 runners across the line. However, Scotch had too much depth to take out the first fixture by 90 points. Hockey displayed great improvement, only to lose 8-1. The progress of football was clear to see in a 4-goal loss to reigning three-peat Alcock Cup champions Scotch. The big winner of the first round was soccer, who could only partially break through after dominating possession in the first half. A late second-half goal, and some dogged defence from Trinity, saw us beat the reigning Lawe Davies Cup winners 1-0.

In other results, 8A soccer continued winning, beating Scotch 7-0, and the 10A soccer team came from 3-0 early in their contest to win 8-3. The Shield Rugby team were involved in a thrilling contest where both schools' defence was on show. Trinity's shield team came out on top 20-15. Seven out of the nine middle school teams were victorious in football, with many of these teams having very convincing wins of over points or more. Congratulations to our Year 7 Badminton teams, who both had 7-2 victories in their first fixture.

Concussion Policy

Trinity has recently implemented a Concussion Policy that takes effect throughout this PSA winter season. A growing and persuasive body of evidence indicates a lower recovery rate in children and adolescents who may experience a concussion. Therefore, acting in the ‘best interest of students, the College will adopt a conservative approach to managing a student’s trauma and their restoration to health, where their return to learn will take priority over their return to competitive sport.'

This Concussion Policy is a comprehensive plan that will be followed by all staff, coaches, parents, and students in the case of a concussion occurring to a student during sports training or games. Whilst the policy information and the full process that has to be followed will be sent to parents of students who suffer a concussion, there are key points that parents and students have to be aware of if a possible concussion occurs:

  1. Students who suffer a head or concussion injury during College sports will be offered First Aid at the time of injury
  2. Students with suspected concussions will not return to play on the day of injury. A clear motto of “If in doubt, sit them out” will be followed by all staff and coaches
  3. All possible concussion/head injuries will be reported by staff to the Director of Sports for follow-up with the parents
    1. If the staff are unaware of a possible head injury to the student, parents are encouraged to report possible concussions to the Director of Sports
    2. Junior School Concussions will be reported to the JS Physical Education Teacher
  4. The Director of Sports will contact the parents by the Monday after the game outlining the Concussion policy process that must be followed before students can be cleared to Return to Sports and Return to Learn.

A clear Return to Sport and Return to Learn process will be followed if a student is diagnosed with a concussion. This process will be sent to the parents of the students affected.

If a possible concussion has been reported or concussion has been diagnosed, then for the College to fulfil its duty of care obligations, students who do not provide a medical clearance letter to the Director of Sports will not be selected for a sporting team.

Enquiries regarding the Concussion Policy can be directed to Mr Ryan Lockyer.

Inaugural Trinity Cross Country Championships

Tuesday, 2 May

Earlier this week, Trinity’s elite endurance runners turned out in force to compete in the College’s first-ever Cross-Country Carnival.

Open to all students by nomination. It aimed to serve as an opportunity for students to further demonstrate the TC Spirit of Excellence and strive to be a part of the College’s team at the upcoming 2023 Champion Schools Cross Country event on the Thursday, 18 May.

Student runners enjoyed perfect conditions along a fast and flat 3km course encompassing Mann Oval and across the Matagarup Bridge. Seeing so many students challenging themselves and demonstrating outstanding athleticism was fantastic. The positive attitude and enthusiasm from the students on the day were undoubtedly in respect of the tremendous effort put in by many staff in supporting on the day and in preparation.

The top placing students for each year group were as follows:

Many personal bests were run, and special mention is deserved for our School Champion, Kobee Beck (12.5), who is the initial recipient of the Perpetual Trophy for the fastest runner across the course on the day (9.49 minutes). What an outstanding performance, Kobee!

Special thanks are extended to the HPE and supporting teaching staff for their outstanding efforts with carnival logistics and to the many administrative, grounds and Pre-Service teachers involved for their exceptional teamwork in ensuring the event ran smoothly.
