Inquiry: Sharing the Planet

The Prep students have been thinking about how the actions of people can negatively impact on sea creatures’ homes.

We discussed common activities such as taking more fish than you need when fishing, how our rubbish sometimes makes its way into the ocean and the fact that we can accidentally damage the coral when snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef.

We also then delved a little deeper and discussed more complex actions such as when oil spills in the ocean and the fact that sea creatures can get stuck in commercial fishing nets. Students were very engaged as the underwater world is so magical!

Maths

The Prep students have been extending their knowledge of number, patterns and data representation. Students did a wonderful job of creating patterns using a range of concrete materials such as unifix blocks.

We also took the classroom outdoors and used natural materials to compare size of leaves, create addition equations and even represent data. Linking back to our Unit of Inquiry, we then used the idea of sea creatures playing in the sea to create worded problems which students then represented in pictures and number sentences.

Wellbeing Week

As part of Wellbeing Week, the Prep students thought about empathy and kindness. We listened to the story, “Have You Filled a Bucket Today?” and then we discussed different things that make us feel positive and happy as well as different actions that we can do for others to make sure their ‘buckets’ are filled each day.

The Preppies came up with so many beautiful ideas such as giving Mum a hug, telling Dad they love them or telling a friend how special they are.

What caring little people we have at BNPS!
