CLASS CLOWNS

An inspiring, creative, funny and brave group of our students developed their comedy writing and performing skills by participating in comedy writing workshops and entering Class Clowns Competition heats. Congratulations to Sam Wakelam who progressed to the State Final.

The Class Clowns Secondary School Competition is part of a national program by the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.  Many talented comedy artists have been discovered through this contest.

We started this when comedian Nellie Thomas ran a practical comedy writing workshop at Kew. Students took the opportunity to present their material and get insightful and supportive feedback.

Four students Lucas Matovinovic, Angel Huang, Sam Wakelam and Lachlan Peele took their acts to the next level by entering one of the Melbourne heats.

This was an amazing experience including a two hour workshop and then a performance/contest at the Melbourne Theatre Company.  We were thrilled when Sam Wakelam (and his writing partner Lachlan Peele) were selected for the State Final.

The State Final took place on  March 14 at the  Melbourne Theatre Company.  This again included a workshop with Comedian Sammy J.  A group of 10 acts then performed to a sold out audience.  It really was the big time.  The acts were all outstanding and hilarious.

Kew High School provides many varied opportunities to develop communication skills, creativity and confidence as part of the public speaking program.  A huge thanks to the Melbourne Comedy Festival for providing opportunities for students to be a part of the festival and cultivating amazing new talent.
