Principal’s Message

Dear Parents and Friends of St Mel’s

We continue to pray for all those impacted by the floods and for those downstream who are anxiously waiting to see what happens next.   We pray for all those helping others in this time of need, volunteers, GVCares, Foodshare, SES, Police, and the Australian Defence Force.  Their support to the Greater Shepparton community has been tremendous.

We are aware some families in our St Mel’s community are dealing with not only financial loss but the emotional trauma of having to evacuate and leave homes and possessions.

Thankfully most of these families are receiving help from the right agencies and community supports.  We will continue to provide help and assistance where we can.  Thank you to Lis Rodriguez, our Wellbeing Team, School Leadership and Teachers for keeping a finger on the pulse and ‘checking in’ when they can.  We are also grateful to the many offers of help from people in our community.   Offers of food parcels, clothes and accommodation have been appreciated and accepted by some.    If you are aware of others in our community who may be doing it tough, please reach out.  That’s what we do well and love about St Mel’s.  Thanks.

It was nice to see the kids back at school on Monday.   Some had many exciting stories to share and for some, their stories were quite different.  Teachers have been careful not to unknowingly distress children who were impacted by the floods.

Natural disasters, such as floods are stressful and often traumatic. What takes place, and the speed with which it happens, can be chaotic, confusing and overwhelming. Understandably, as a parent or carer, you may feel worried about the impact on your child.

Attendance Matters…

Attendance Requirements

If your child is sick or absent, you are required to notify the school as soon as possible on the day of absence, by phoning or emailing the school.

Notifying the school of your child’s absence either prior to, or on the day that they will be away, helps ensure the safety and wellbeing of children and will fulfil your legal responsibility.

All Victorian schools are required to contact parents/carers as soon as practicable on the same day of an unexplained student absence. If your child is absent on a particular day and you have not contacted the school to explain why, the absence will be marked as unexplained.

This system also promotes daily school attendance. Going to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education, they learn new things every day – missing school puts them behind.
