2023 Grade 8-10 Elective Subject Selections

This afternoon parents and carers will receive an email containing the Grade 8-10 Electives Subjects Guide and a link to an online form to make selections for 2023 electives. Forms are due by back by 3:00pm, Monday 28 November.

Grade 10 Student Leadership 2023

The College aims to promote a culture of servant leadership in our students. Servant leaders aspire to positions of responsibility so they can make a positive difference for the benefit of others. They exercise empathy, listening, humility and authenticity as they plan and implement initiatives for the good of those they lead. This form of leadership encourages diversity of thought, creates a culture of trust, has an other-centred mindset, and fosters leadership in others. Grade 9 students are being given an opportunity to apply and be selected for a leadership role in 2023. Student leadership positions available in Grade 10 include College Vice-Captains, House Captains and Class Captains. All student leaders will be part of the College Student Representative Council and active members of Secondary Doulos. We eagerly anticipate receiving student nominations, to then be voted on by Grade 8 and 9 students, and be interviewed by a panel of School Executive Leaders.

All Grade 9 parents/carers and students have been emailed an information pack, including a student application form. Spare forms are available from the School Office. Completed forms are due to Mr David Witcomb (Acting Head of Secondary School) by 3:00pm Monday 28 November.

Tasmanian Solar Car Challenge

The Tasmanian Model Solar Challenge is an exciting hands-on STEM competition for schools. It helps link concepts learnt in the classroom with the physical world and acts as an effective motivator for students to become, or remain, engaged in the areas of Science, Engineering and Technology.

Students from Secondary Schools across Hobart came together to race their solar powered cars last Saturday at Clarence High School. Nicholas and Josh in Grade 9 worked together over four Design Technology lessons to get a car ready to race. Much design and testing went into the car both before and during the event. Our car performed well on the day, making it into the top 16 cars of around 50 entries. After an initial setback with the car coming off the starting ramp in our first race, modifications were made to ensure this did not happen again. Considering power to weight factors, Nic decided to cut the car in half and reattached the solar panel ensuring the car still met the design brief and specifications. This reduced the weight by about 100 grams and helped us to progress through to the top 16 knock out round, in which we were knocked out after the first race.

For the first time entering the competition, we think we did an excellent job and have many ideas for improvements next year. The competition will be open again next year for any secondary students who wish to join.

Science Fair

Our Grade 9/10 Advanced Science students hosted a Science Fair today, showcasing their individual research projects. Students and staff at SCC were encouraged to view the exhibition and the Fair did not disappoint! From creating soda bubble balls, to an investigation of pH levels in the sand throughout Australia, to the effectiveness of two commonly used hand soaps in combating bacteria, there was an incredible variety of investigations on display and both staff and students enjoyed the exhibition. Well done on "mixing it up" Science students!

Secondary Free Dress Day - Thursday 8 December (Repeat)

In Christian Studies we have been learning about the impact of the church on the wider community and have looked at both positive and negative examples of this. Whilst there have been a number of periods throughout the history of the Church in which Jesus’ teachings have been ignored or taken out of context, our studies have revealed that the Christian faith has had a profound impact around the world in bettering individual lives and, in some circumstances, entire nations. This includes the civil rights movement in the United States and the missionary journeys throughout the world, past and present. These sincere followers of Christ have sought to rise to the challenge articulated in Matthew where Jesus said, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:40.

As a practical response to what we’ve been learning, we intend to hold a free dress day on Thursday 8 December. Students are asked to give a gold coin donation, with all proceeds going to The Salvation Army's Christmas Appeal. The Salvation Army aids the needy and gives those who are struggling a hand, making a real, tangible difference in our community.
