Learning Hub & Wellbeing

'The Hub has become a real asset in our school, highly valued by staff and students alike.'

Year Six ‘Bright Sparks’

Over the past two weeks we have been fortunate to have Catherine West, Generalist Youth Worker from Mornington Peninsula Shire, at school to present the ‘Bright Sparks’ program to assist our Year Six students with the transition process into Secondary school. The students had an opportunity to discuss healthy habits and staying safe online. Topics, such as, navigating transport, timetables, homework and social aspects of starting in a new environment were also addressed. The students were introduced to the activities and programs provided by Mornington Peninsula Youth Services (MPYS). Links to these are proved below, along with a link to information about the new youth hub being designed and built at Olympic Park. The Southern Peninsula Youth Hub will provide a variety of local care support services and programs, as well as a drop-in space for people aged 10 to 25.

Step Up - Transition

This term we run our Step Up Program to help support both students and parents prepare and transition to a new year level. Transition includes possible new teacher, new room and different students in the class. We need to consider all these changes and prepare and empower our students in managing change. This program involves a four step process. This experience provides opportunities to meet new classmates and talk about the similarities and differences in their new grades as well as becoming familiar with a new physical learning environment.

During the last couple of weeks our students have visited new learning spaces with the aim to familiarise them with their 2023 classroom environment.

In the next step students will be given additional opportunities to mix with students in their existing and new year levels. Many of our students will be provided with additional transition support facilitated by our Wellbeing team.

On Tuesday 6th December student gather in their new class groups with their 2023 teacher in their classroom for 2023.

Parents can also support this transition by talking positively to their children about the next stage of their learning journey. Engaging our children in the process empowers them to face the changes with confidence and gives them permission to accept the feelings and possible apprehensions that might arise along the way.

We know that providing a thoroughly planned transition is the best way to assist our students and ultimately reduce the amount of anxiety experienced and begin a new year feeling positive and secure.
