School Athletics Carnival

For the first time, we had a combined athletics day with Balmoral Community College. As part of our cluster Goroke P-12 were also invited but unfortunately couldn't make it this year. The Edenhope and Balmoral students from Year 3 to 12 combined across age groups and competed in a range of track and field events. Despite some cold, rainy weather, the students enjoyed socialising and competing against fresh faces for the day. Hopefully this is the first of many combined sports days to come!

Senior Football Report

On Monday, May 23rd, our Senior Football Team made its way to Horsham City Oval for a modified game against Murtoa College. It was a glorious day, City Oval was in great nick and with the promise of the Colonel at the end of the day, our players were looking forward to a classic contest. Initially it was thought we would be playing 8 aside across the ground, it became evident we were playing 8 aside on a full ground. If that wasn’t daunting enough our opponents were comprised of a range of senior Wimmera and HDFL footballers, GWV Rebels representatives whilst we were made up of a patchwork of footballers, hockey players and mountain bike riders. Our boys were not perturbed and worked hard early, but it was evident the experience of our opposition was going to make it a long day, but it didn’t discourage the boys.

Murtoa player, potential draftee, and friend of Jordan Baxter, Oscar Gawith, asked to join our band of brothers at quarter time, making an immediate and significant difference to our structure and game play. Suddenly Adam Hood was tackling with aggression and running with reckless abandon, Gideon was sticking tackles, Jaali was putting shots on goal, Sammy Caldow was sending in forward entries, Buzz Brennan was clunking marks and Jordy was sending down barrels from miles out. Whilst we may not have come home with the chocolates, football comradery and sportsmanship were on display in spades. It was a great day.

Year 7 & 8 Football Report

On a glorious Autumn Day our Year 7 & 8 Football team made its way to City Oval to compete with our Cluster partners in Balmoral/Goroke and Holy Trinity Lutheran College.

We started off out of the blocks against Balmoral/Goroke with a goal inside the first minute, but scores dried up quickly. Our boys clearly dominated possession but continually kicked the ball down the throat of the opposition’s defenders. Oscar Dunstan dominated through the midfield, whilst the bigger bodies of Mitch Hateley and Jack Nelson clearly helped the Swannies to get ahead. The game seemed to ebb and flow after the first ten minutes and fortunately we were lucky to come out in front by 5 points.

In the second game we came up against a much bigger opponent who took control of and dominated us from go to woe. Our group of players never did give in and as the game continued it was evident that we were just missing some of the bigger bodies.

Whilst we went down convincingly, we then had the chance to join with Balmoral and Goroke to create a proper Cluster team to take on Holy Trinity. Whilst they kicked off as they finished against us, it was evident by the midway mark of the first half that we started to take the ascendency of the game. All it took was to have a few bigger bodies competing in the air and across the ground and suddenly the smaller and less experienced players started taking confidence from this. Our own Lucas Thomson snagged a couple of goals in a row and suddenly the confidence levels were through the roof.

Senior and Year 7/8 Netball

Over the last couple of weeks the year 7/8 and 11/12 girls had a day out to compete in the Little Desert netball competition in Horsham. Against some tough opponents our senior netballers played some strong netball in both goals and defence. Considering the girls had never played as a team before, they managed to gel and display some exceptional passages of play. The following week the year 7 and 8 students took to the courts. With all but one other team out due to Covid-19 we only had a single game to play. Against Balmoral our girls played beautifully to come away with a win. Afterwards it was fantastic to offer both schools a fun match to combine the teams and enjoy a social game. The girls demonstrated initiative and great sportsmanship all day, from the warm up to the final goal. All our netballers should be very proud of their efforts!
