School Council Report

Tuesday 21st February 2023

President: Sweetha Subhas

Each iNewsletter edition will provide a very short summary of any information that School Council feels is important to share with our community. Our February meeting requires communication in regard to school crossing changes and parking reminders, 2023 School Council Elections and upcoming AGM, increasing student toilet investigation and a reminder of ratified Student Free Days for the remaining 2023 school year.

School Crossing Change and School Parking reminder

Our Highpark Drive Crossing has been moved further north, closer to the recently opened Wollert Secondary College. This was a suggestion by our local council in an attempt to create a safe crossing space for all children. Please reinforce with your children that they need to cross with crossing supervisors on both Highpark Drive and De Rossi Boulevard. We have noticed a number of cars speeding along these strips, something we cannot control, so the more we reinforce safe actions with our children the better.

Construction around our school is ongoing and has now moved to High St/Epping Rd and later this year, an upgrade of De Rossi Boulevard. All schools are challenged by adequate parking but our struggle looks to continue for some time with the planned roadworks and upgrades. Unfortunately we have a number of our families parking in the KIRRIP COMMUNITY CENTRE carpark. We understand the parking shortage sometimes forces families to park here however it is important we do not park in this space as it impacts parking access for kinder and maternal health needs.

Noted at School Council was the increased vigilance of Parking Inspectors along adjacent streets handing out fines to our families, sometimes with people sitting inside their cars. There are not always signs up indicating parking or traffic needs however general parking rules apply to all. We would like you to consider this as a community announcement to park carefully and consciously, as any families who receive fines need to be aware that this is a council issue, not a school issue.

2023 School Council Elections and AGM

School Council provides an opportunity for a broad representation of our school community to meet, discuss and advocate for students and families in the partnership and quest for school improvement. Each year an election process is in place to allow new parents to nominate and show their interest in such a position.  You do not need to have any previous school council expertise, but rather a keen interest in getting to know how our school aims to work together to get better at what we do.

Our election process for our 2023 School Council is open and will be for the next seven days, with parents able to nominate themselves for a School Council position. Nomination forms connected to a Compass notification will be sent out by Jodee (Reception) or alternatively, nomination forms can also be picked up at Reception.

Some current School Council members will retain their position for the 2023 school year. Some may choose not to continue in their current role. We are seeking two parent members to join school council for a 2 year timeframe, with a one year community member option also open. If you are interested complete a nomination form and submit before Thursday 9th March. Should our nomination interest exceed our School Council configuration needs for 2023, a ballot will be enacted with votes sought from community.

Once the School Council is confirmed, successful members will be notified and welcomed officially at the AGM on Tuesday 21st March where new Office Bearers will be voted in for the coming year.

Our quest for more Student Toilets

As our student population increases so do our general facility needs. While our new build is meeting our learning needs in so many ways, it is very apparent we require more toilets than what has been provided within the initial build. Leanne (Principal) is in liaison with Department representatives regarding this critical need with the hope that some relocatable toilets can be provided in the near future. We will keep you updated about this.

Open Days at Wollert

Every term our school offers two open days instead of scheduled school tours. Our experience is that school tours cater to the needs of only a few people at a time, take a lot of time to coordinate and prevent school leaders from being inside our Learning Communities to support and coach our teams day to day. Instead we want visitors to Wollert to experience an authentic day in the life of our students, where visitors can walk in and around our school buildings to get a feel for what we are about. Our term one dates are below. All families members, curious community members and prospective families are welcome to attend on any of our open days.

NAPLAN for our Year 3 & 5 Students

Our students in year 3 and 5 will be taking part in the annual NAPLAN assessment between Wednesday 15th and Friday 17th March. Structured assessment of this nature can cause worry or concern for some children, while others just participate as they would in any part of their learning day. This is just one set of assessments that will tell us something about your child, but will certainly not tell us everything. We encourage our students to do their personal best during this time however we also let them know that their teachers have a full understanding of their skills and capabilities, which we readily share with parents. You can expect a detailed report to come home at the beginning of term two to communicate how your child performed over this assessment period.

PHOTO DAY

Friday 24th March is our school photo day. This is the day for our students to come to school looking BRILLIANT with big smiles and in our school uniform. Typically our students would be requested to wear their sport uniform for Active Friday on this day however we encourage students to wear their daily uniform on this day so that the home group photos look cohesive. Photo Order forms will be able to be accessed via a Compass notification with direct links to ordering with MSP Photography available also.
