St Brigid's News and Events

News from 3Y

This term our Wellbeing focus is ‘Personal Strengths’. Students have been exploring their personal strengths and challenges, identifying the skills and strengths they wish to develop.

Students discussion and activities have centered around the understandings that-

  • Everybody's good at something.
  • People are good at different activities and skills because they have different strengths.
  • It is okay for people to have different strengths.
  • Our strengths change over time.
  • Participating in activities that we are good at and that we enjoy makes us feel happy.

3Y students identified their strengths, displaying them in creative flowers.

Digital Wellbeing

The quickest way to have cyberbullying messages, violent or sexual material, illegal activity, or unwanted contact removed from the internet is to report directly to the social media service or platform where the incident occurred.

Young people often need the support of an adult to make a report, so here are the steps you can take:

  1. Collect evidence before reporting to the social media service or taking other action. Take screenshots showing what has been happening and for how long.
  2. Report to the social media service, game, app, or website where the incident occurred. Use our eSafety Guide to help find the appropriate links for each service.
  3. After you report abusive content to a service or platform, they may remove the content straight away. They may also block the person who posted it or delete their account. In the case of illegal content, the service may also refer the matter to police.

If the above process doesn’t get you the support you need:

eSafety can help.

Wellbeing News

Late last year, Sarah Kimball and Hannah Richards along with myself undertook professional development through the Butterfly Foundation to learn how to better support young people to help them to develop positive body awareness.  As a whole school we have made a commitment to  finding ways to like, accept, love and feel positive about our bodies. Our first steps have included taking into consideration different body shapes when reviewing our school uniform, as well as posters in the staffroom to remind staff about ways we can rephrase colloquial negative expressions about our bodies into positive body phrases.

In the coming weeks students will be introduced to the notion of Body Kindness with a focus on peer interactions. Students will discuss and explore the idea that all bodies have value, and that no one should inadvertently suggest that one body shape is preferable over another. Body kind has many resources available to support families and others on how to be kind to their bodies. Click here for more information

RE News

27 MAY TO 3 JUNE

National Reconciliation Week—27 May to 3 June—is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia.

The dates for NRW are the same each year. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey— the successful 1967 referendum, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively.

27 May 1967 - On this day, Australia’s most successful referendum saw more than 90 per cent of Australians vote to give the Australian Government power to make laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and recognise them in the Census.

3 June 1992 - On this day, the Australian High Court delivered the Mabo decision, the culmination of Eddie Koiki Mabo’s challenge to the legal fiction of ‘terra nullius’ (land belonging to no one) and leading to the legal recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of lands. This decision paved the way for Native Title.

Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The National Reconciliation Week 2022 theme, “Be Brave. Make Change.” is a challenge to all Australians— individuals, families, communities, organisations and government—to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for the benefit of all Australians.

This year we are asking everyone to make change beginning with brave actions in their daily lives – where they live, work, play and socialise. At St Brigid’s we will celebrate National Reconciliation Week with students contributing to a display, classroom discusiions and participating in a prayer service on Friday 3 June.

Artist Spotlight

This week's Artist Sportlight is on Jessica L from 2Y.  We just love Jess' collage based on the work of Laura Blythman.  Jessica painted all her paper before assembling them to create her imaginary landscape.  Beautiful work Jessica.
