Year Three/Four News

Indigenous Culture

This term in Integrated Studies the Year 3/4 students are learning about local cultures and celebrations. Last week Jane Marini came to speak to students about Indigenous culture. Jane shared with students important cultural artefacts, including a 200 year old coolamon, used for carrying food or babies. Jane explained the importance of these artefacts to Indigenous culture such as the giving of a possum skin to a new baby, a practice that is still done today when an Indigenous baby is born in Ballarat. Students also participated in a creation spirit dance that included actions for kangaroos, emus, mara and ma (hunter and gatherer) and Bunjil the Eagle. We appreciate Jane sharing her knowledge and culture.
