Environmental Council

Welcome back to Term 2! The Environmental Council is looking forward to another exciting term ahead with many more volunteer opportunities and activities around the Collegefor those looking to get involved in the sustainability of our school. Projects that we are currently completing including the Regeneration Project, and our regular paper shredding and recycling initiatives, have been progressing steadily with our student committee continuing their work towards an eco-friendly school. For more information on these projects, and news relating to several new objectives we have in the works, make sure to keep an eye out on the Environmental Council’s Google Classroom and at our meetings! In addition, we would like to recognise and extend our gratitude to all those who participated in and assisted the smooth running of both our significant events last term including the McCarthy Clean Up Australia Day alongside the Rotary Club of Tamworth, and our guest speaker event.

At the conclusion of last term, Environmental Council members participated in the McCarthy Clean Up Australia Day event to clean up within the Collegegrounds and along Tribe Street. Even though it faced delays and was impacted by weather, we were extremely happy to see a large turn out of willing volunteers, with all participants doing an amazing job! We would also like to thank all the senior students who assisted in the supervision of juniors to ensure the event went without a hitch. Our sincere thanks to all who took part in making our grounds a better environment for both students and our wildlife alike, commemorating this special event! Furthermore, for all those who attended the Clean Up Australia Day Event in partnership with the Rotary Club of Tamworth First Light on the Sunday of that week, we would like to congratulate and recognise your involvement in the community on behalf of the Environmental Council.

Furthermore, we would like to thank the guest speaker Jo Taranto, the director of “Good for the Hood” for speaking late last term on our impacts on the environment, and the actions we can take as individuals, and as a school community to advocate and encourage environmental awareness and management. As a community advocate and sustainability educator, she allowed students the opportunity to further develop their knowledge of our personal environmental footprints and discussion of new initiatives for the school community. Thanks again to Jo Taranto for coming out and the Rotary Club of Tamworth First Light for their support in arranging this event.

If you are not already a member of the Environmental Council and would like to get involved, meetings are every Thursday at lunchtime. The team is always open to contributions to new or existing projects and ensures a welcoming environment for new and returning members! Upcoming events include:

  • Regular periods in which our specific student groups in the school collect recycling bins from around the school for correct disposal or re-purposing, paper shredding for mulch towards the Regeneration Project, and seed collection and planting at the regeneration area behind the oval. Speak to Mr. Nichols at one of our meetings if you would like to get involved in any of these groups.
  • Guest speakers to discuss conservation, sustainability, and volunteer opportunities with members.
  • New projects to be discussed in upcoming meetings!

To conclude, we would like to give special thanks to Mr Nichols, Mr Leu, and all members of the Environmental Council for their continued support of projects, meetings, and goals. Special thanks to all members who volunteered for McCarthy’s and the Rotary Club of Tamworth’s Clean Up Australia Day events, participated in our guest speaker event, and to those who continue to support the Regeneration project and recycling initiatives at school!
