Let’s imagine you have two candies: a sour one and sweet one.

Now, in your mind, try the sour one.  How does it taste?  Does it taste so sour it makes you grimace?

Sour candy can serve as a reminder of sin.  Just as sour candy can take us by surprise because it doesn’t taste as sweet as we’d expect or want, so it is with our lives.  You see, our lives are not as loving as God planned or intended them to be because of sin.  The Bible describes sin like this: Everyone has sinned. No one measures up to God’s glory  (Romans 3:23).

That’s the sad news.  But we’re not finished using our imaginations yet!

Now imagine you’re enjoying a deliciously sweet candy.  Yum!

Sweet candies can remind us of God because both the candy and God are a joy to have in your life!  In fact, the Bible says God’s word is like honey: Your words are very sweet to my taste!  They are sweeter than honey to me (Psalm 119:103).  The Bible is like honey because its main message is God’s love for people through the saving work of Jesus – and that’s news that fills us with joy and delight.

So then, you could say the sourness of sin is taken away thanks to the sweetness of God’s love for people through the saving work of Jesus.
