Head of Junior Years

Mrs Maria Denholm

There has been a lot happening in Junior Years so far this term. Year 2 and 4 have completed their swimming lessons at AquaPulse with Year 1 and 3 lessons coming up soon.

Volunteering

Thank you to those parents who have volunteered their time to help out at the pool.  If you would like to volunteer you need to complete these three tasks:

  1. Apply for a Working with Children Check.  You can do this here.

  2. Complete the Valuing Safe Communities online course through the Lutheran Church of Australia. Please follow the instructions on the PDF attached.

  3. Make a time through SEQTA Direct Message to meet with myself, Maria Denholm – Head of Junior Years to go through the College policies relating to Volunteering and Child Protection.

This information is then stored in SEQTA so teachers know which parents are available to help out with volunteering in the classroom as well as on excursions and camps.

Junior Years Chapel

This term the students have returned to face-to-face Chapel in year level pairs.  Triple vaccinated parents and friends are welcome to attend any of the service times, we will require proof.  Chapel begins at 8:50am in the church. This term Chapel offerings are supporting Australian Lutheran World Service.  Students are encouraged to bring along a gold coin to place in the offering basket at Chapel. The roster for the remainder of the term is as follows:

Week 5 – Wednesday May 25 – Prep & Year 2, Thursday May 26 – Years 4 & 5

Week 6 – Wednesday June 1 – Years 1 & 2, Thursday June 2 – Years 3 & 5

Week 7 – Wednesday June 8 – Prep & Year 2, Thursday June 9 – Years 4 & 5

Week 8 – Wednesday June 15 – Years 1 & 2, Thursday June 16 – Years 3 & 5

Reading IS Rocket Science

Ms Christina Jasem – Learning Support Coordinator and I will be presenting a parent information session about how young children learn to read, how you can help at home and what that looks like at Good News.  This will be of particular interest to Prep and Year 1 parents, but any parents are welcome to attend.

The session will be in the chapel on Wednesday June 1 at 2:30pm. A Signmee note will be sent next week for parents to RSVP.   Please see the attached information flyer.

Uniform Reminders

A reminder about uniform as the weather becomes cooler.  Students are welcome to wear the College rain jacket, beanie and scarf on their way to and from school and also at recess and lunch for warmth but need to take them off when in class.

During swimming and photos teachers noticed that many uniform items, especially jumpers are not named.  This makes it very difficult to find them if they become lost.

Three-way Conferences

Thank you to all those parents who attended the Three-way Conferences along with their children to find out more about their learning which has taken place.  If you missed your session due to illness, please contact the individual teacher via SEQTA and arrange an alternative time.

At the end of Term 2, which is also the end of Semester 1, Progress Reports will be published for all Junior Years students.  It is important that when your children are well, they are at school so that their learning continues, and teachers are able to assess them and confirm their progress.

Year 6 Drama

Last week the Prep and Year 1 classes were invited to be the audience for the Year 6 Drama elective performances.  The photos show PHC enjoying the presentation of Indigenous Dream Time stories. Thank you to Ms Casey Davis for inviting the Junior Years students.

Road Safety - Pedestrian Crossing, Caraleena Drive

We ask parents to remind their children when Crossing Caraleena Drive, to use the official pedestrian crossing.
