By definition - Holistic Education is the philosophy of educating the whole person, academically, socially, physically, spiritually and emotionally.
Last week we spoke about the ICAS academic assembly, and this week on Monday I was coaching the first XI Football Team (soccer) competing against 9 other schools in the region. It was great to see the students performing well, displaying courage, doing their best, and the sportsmanship and comradery was excellent.
On Thursday, I drove to the Year 8 camp for the evening, staying overnight and returning the following day to make it back in time for my Year 10, Engineering class.
This gives you a small glimpse into just one week of holistic education.
School camp is a fantastic opportunity for children to develop new skills, friendships and interests. However, for many kids (and their parents!) just the thought of sleeping away from home can provoke high anxiety.
The benefits of school camp are numerous, here are the top 5:
1. Development of social skills
School camp is a great opportunity to develop a range of social skills.
2. Development of independence skills
This is a great opportunity for kids to grow up by learning how take care of themselves and to do things on their own.
3. Development of decision-making skills
Children are responsible for making more of their own choices.
4. Increased environmental awareness
During camp, children are exposed to authentic nature-based experiences. Hands-on activities in the outdoors stimulate all senses and facilitate learning.
