VCAL - FOOD FOR LIFE
Students in Yr 12 Food for life – completed a breakfast recently.
They were given free choice to produce a big breakfast of their choice. Students had to ensure ingredients were cooked at the correct times, to ensure that the food was served hot and to allow the entire class to sit down at the same time to eat.
With the table set, students enjoyed eating together over conversation. It was a good opportunity to have students express their interests among the class and to share connectedness. Students finished up by cleaning the table and doing the dishes – skills any household would appreciate.
Let’s hope these valuable lessons will make them independent, capable and safe, when cooking their own meals, outside of school.
Students learnt all about different cuts of meat this week with an emphasis on cost of different cuts and how to prepare them successfully.
Tough cuts, like the shoulder and leg, are generally cheaper to purchase. The trade off being the length of time it needs to be cooked for. What a perfect example to complete slow cooking Pork shoulder in class, for melt in your mouth Pulled Pork Rolls.
Not only was it economical, but illustrating some simple steps, and the use of a slow cooker overnight, pure magic was achieved. We finished off the meat in the oven and made the BBQ simmer sauce while we were waiting. Fresh coleslaw and an extra drizzle of BBQ simmer sauce in a crunchy roll, really did make for an enjoyable lunch. A great budget friendly recipe to keep, and one for them to add to their moving out of home winning recipe collection.
This recipe is a hit in my household. Click the link below.

Note: We used apple juice, not beer/cider, in the slow cooker and used apple juice, and a splash of apple cider vinegar in the simmer sauce.
