Work Experience 2022

Year 10 students have just completed work experience from the 16-20 May which is an integral part of the curriculum. Feedback received from students, teachers, parents and employers was very positive. Many students were able to explore possible future pathways and secured part-time work and some were offered the possibility of an apprenticeship when they finish school.

Students have also gained a better understanding of the requirements of employers and the workforce and have returned to school with renewed enthusiasm and motivation.

Work experience positions covered a broad spectrum of job areas including hospitality, retail, childcare, aviation, teaching, sport and fitness and various trade areas.

We were very impressed with the manner in which students conducted themselves in the workplace and they should be congratulated on their fine achievements.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the staff members of Greensborough College who visited and contacted students on work experience. The dedication shown by staff is an important factor in ensuring that the work experience program is a successful and worthwhile experience for all students involved.

Thank you to everyone who supported the work experience program.

WORK EXPEREINCE

STORIES FROM STUDENTS

As part of the work experience program, we got the opportunity to go to Jets Studios. They have so much to offer to anyone who has an interest in music, art, media or things like event managing and planning. Jets Studios is a creative arts facility that also runs community groups for young people in Banyule such as street art, music vibes, and rainbow space. During our time there, we were able to help set up the recording studios, take stock of merchandise, prepare for the afternoon community groups, as well as learn more about the technical side of music production. The Jets staff were supportive, inclusive and friendly, making Jets Studios an excellent work environment. We really enjoyed and valued our time there.

For work experience I went to a Primary School in Greensborough and was able to experience what a job in teaching would be like. I went to a range of different grades and got to work with the children and help teach in the classroom. I also helped in the art room and the admin office which made me think about all the different roles there are at a primary school and which one I would like to do. I really enjoyed this experience, and it has helped me get an idea of what I want to do for my future career. My favourite part about the week was working with the grade preps because they were lots of fun and cute. This week showed me how much I love working with children and I can see myself doing this in the future.

For the week of Work Experience, I worked at Listen In, a language and learning Speech Pathology clinic. Throughout the week, I got to have a closer look at what happens at a Speech Pathology Clinic. I helped to set up appointments, asked questions and gained a greater understanding of that workplace. I found it very useful not only to help think about my future, but also to gain a wider awareness of the dynamic of an office and workplace. I really enjoyed Work Experience; it was a great opportunity.

For my week of work experience I was given the opportunity to work as a cabinet maker. I spent 2 days working in the factory.  Some of the things I did were helping my boss place large pieces of wood on machinery for it to be cut, I also built drawers for a wardrobe. The other 2 days I worked on site in someone’s house, I helped build a wardrobe and a kitchen. The things I enjoyed most about work experience was being able to work in an environment that I hope to work in one day. The benefits I gained from work experience was to see firsthand what it is like to work as an apprentice carpenter/cabinet maker. It also gave me the chance to experience what working in this field of work would be like.
