Year 4 Reflection

The Year 4 students presented in Assembly last Thursday. They shared some of the different types of poetry they had been reading and writing in class, such as Acrostics, Limericks and Haiku poems. They also wrote some wonderfully descriptive metaphors and similes. Imagine likening your family to a picnic or a campfire, or likening a dancer to a swan and ocean waves to a galloping horse.

In honour of Mother’s Day, a number of students read simile poems dedicated to their very special mums. Here is a sample of the favourite similes created by Year 4 students:

My mother is as awesome as a superhero.
She is as beautiful as an early morning sunrise.
My Mum is as beautiful as a sun shining in the sky.
You are as beautiful as a butterfly flying in the sky.
As calm as a mother turtle gliding with her babies.
She is as funny as a floppy flamingo.
You are as generous as Santa Claus at Christmas.
My Mum is as gentle as a gust of rustling wind.
You’re as gentle as a teddy bear.
You’re as gorgeous as a rainbow.
She is as happy as a monkey.
You are as hardworking as a bee collecting honey.
Your hugs are more powerful than a shooting star.
You are as kind as a monkey sharing his bananas.
You’re more precious than the greatest treasure.
You are as pretty as the sunset.
My Mum is as smart as a professor.
Your smile is brighter than the sun.
My Mum is as pretty as a colourful peacock.
My Mum is as supportive as a hundred cheerleaders.
As thoughtful as a person who helped an endangered animal.
You are warmer than the sun itself.

Thank you to all our wonderful mothers. We love and appreciate you all.

P&F Fun Run

Save the date for this year's Fun Run.  More information coming soon.

Under 8’s Morning

Due to the weather, Under 8’s Morning has been postponed until Friday, 10 June. This new date will coincide with our ‘Fiver for a Farmer’ dress-up day. The theme for Under 8’s Morning is ‘play in an ever changing world’. The children will engage in activities to support this theme during Lessons 1 and 2. Please ensure your child/ren are at their classroom by 8:30 am, with sunscreen applied at home. We look forward to a wonderful morning of fun and games!

National Assessment Program

Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN)

In Week 5, students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 who were absent for the NAPLAN will have the opportunity to participate in catch-up sessions on Monday 16 May and Tuesday 17 May.

All tests, except Year 3 Writing, will be completed online. Year 3 students will complete all other assessments on either their own laptop (if owned) or a school device. Year 5 students will complete the assessments on their own laptops. If students are using their own device, they must bring their laptop to every session and ensure it is fully charged. They also require wired headphones.

NAPLAN tests are constructed to give students an opportunity to demonstrate skills they have learnt over time through the curriculum, and NAPLAN test days should be treated as just another routine event on the College calendar. Please support your child/ren by reassuring them NAPLAN is just one part of their school program and advise them to simply do their best on the day.

Scholastic Book Fair

Clayfield College is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair from Monday 16 May until Thursday 19 May, in the Lower LRC. The theme of this year’s event is ‘Dive into Reading’! The goal of the Book Fair is to increase literacy by encouraging families to come together to promote reading, books and lifelong learning.

We would greatly appreciate your help in making our Book Fair a success. During the event, your child/ren will come home with a ‘wish list’ of two items from the Book Fair. The ‘wish list’ can be used to make online purchases. If you choose this option, please return the ‘wish list’ to the College with record of your payment. Alternatively, you are more than welcome to visit the Book Fair with your child/ren before school from 7:50 am to 8:20 am on the dates listed above. You will be able to purchase directly from the Book Fair via an electronic funds transfer.

Please consider purchasing an item from the Book Fair. Your contribution will make a positive difference toward improving literacy in our College. The Book Fair also encourages children to be excited about reading and learning.

The Premier’s Reading Challenge

Our Prep to Year 6 students will participate in the Premier’s Reading Challenge from now until Friday 26 August. This is an annual initiative that aims to improve literacy and encourage children to read for pleasure and learning. Each student will bring home a reading record form to complete. To successfully fulfil the challenge, children must read or experience the allocated number of books for their year level during the reading period. Students who complete the challenge have their efforts recognised through the receipt of a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier of Queensland.

COVID-19 FAQ - Close Contacts

What do I do if I am a close contact and do not have symptoms of COVID-19?

You should monitor for symptoms for 7 days from the last time someone in your household tested positive for COVID-19.

If you remain symptom-free, you can leave your home for any reason.

While you are a close contact you must:

  • wear a face mask at all times when outside the home
  • not visit vulnerable settings, such as hospitals, aged care and disability facilities, unless in exceptional or compassionate circumstances (for example, end of life visits)

It is also recommended that you:

  • test for COVID-19 if you develop symptoms
  • avoid large gatherings or crowded indoor events
  • work or study from home if you can.

If a close contact is leaving home, it is recommended that they undertake regular testing (such as on day 0, 2, 4, 6).

If you have had COVID-19 in the previous 12 weeks, you are not required to do the close contact testing, unless advised to do so by your medical practitioner.

Can I go to work or school while I am a close contact?

If you have COVID-19 symptoms, stay at home until the symptoms resolve and do not attend work or school.

If you do not have any symptoms and are unable to work or study from home, notify your employer or educational setting before you return. You will have to comply with any additional requirements set by your workplace or educational setting.

Clayfield College Requirements for Close Contacts

All children who attend school whilst they are a close contact must wear a face mask. All parents/caregivers/family members who are close contacts must wear a mask when on the Campus.
