Feast of The Nativity of St. John the Baptist
The Feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist was celebrated yesterday, Wednesday 24th June. St. John the Baptist, a cousin of Jesus, is the only Saint, other than the Virgin Mary whose birthday is celebrated by the Church in a Liturgical feast. Other Saints are remembered by the day of their death when they entered the Kingdom of Heaven. Also, like the announcement of the birth of Jesus, St. John's birth was announced by the Archangel Gabriel.
John the Baptist was known for evangelisation and his baptising of Jesus Christ. Evangelisation is the proclamation of Christ by word and teaching people to live their lives as the Gospels tell us to. He led his followers to turn to Christ, calling Him the "Lamb of God" and these people were among the first Christians.
