From the Student Wellbeing Officer

Welcome to Term 4!  This term sees longer daylight hours, more sunshine, warmer temperatures and the approach of Christmas!

Who has ever listened to a child talk about what they wanted to do when they grew up?  Firefighters, doctors, astronauts, policemen and teachers are often mentioned.  Do you remember having dreams like that when you were a child?  Unfortunately, as we get older, reality can often diminish these dreams and ideals and we sometimes settle for less; those grandiose dreams of our childhood can appear to be unattainable and fanciful.

Our students have dreams too.  Some of our students have told me that they want to cure cancer, end poverty, and rid the world of bullying, drugs, hate and violence.  It is indicative of the world we currently live in.

It is important to encourage and support our children when they talk about their dreams.  Maybe their dreams are unattainable and fanciful.  Maybe their dreams, no matter how grandiose, could change the world if they are pursued.  We can never underestimate the power of passion.

After a concentrated focus on identity during Terms 2 and 3 with students in Years 3 to 6 participating in THE REAL ME! program, this term will have a focus on community engagement and the outside world, and how we can make a difference.

Students will participate in a couple of class sessions focusing on ‘Dreaming Big’; discovering their passions and dreams and exploring how they can use these passions and dreams to make a difference in the world.  As this will be a key Wellbeing focus for 2020, this will lay the groundwork for introducing this theme.  Stay tuned to find out more about how this will be outworked practically during Term 4 and moving into 2020.

If you would like further activities to do at home and/or further information regarding the programs I run, please do not hesitate to contact me at traceym@suvic.org.au or at the school on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
