Hi Families,

It has been lovely seeing everyone online these past few weeks but I am really looking forward to seeing everyone in person very soon! Just some quick updates.

SSV Virtual Track & Field

School Sport Victoria (SSV) have their Virtual Track and Field Events up again this year. There are a number of events the students can participate in, they may just need a family member to assist them with timing and set up. They can then enter their results at the page below. The events available are:

- Sprints

- 800m and 1500m

- Standing Long Jump

- Standing Triple Jump

- Tennis Ball Shot Put

- Walk 800m/1500m

- Heptathlon (which includes these events in this order 100m sprint, standing long jump, tennis ball shot put and 800m run.)

This is open to all students but I sent this on to the year 4 to 6 students a couple of weeks ago as they may be interested in competing as we missed our District Athletics last term. Each time you complete an event, a point goes towards the school. Our school is in the Easten Metropolitan Primary section if asked.

National Ride to School Day Poster Competition

On the 25th of March next year it is National Ride to School Day. The students have the opportunity to create a poster that could become the official poster for the day. Plus if your design is chosen you can win a new bike.

Winter Olympics in Beijing

The Winter Olympics are only 4 months away! Students have the opportunity to create art work that can be put up in the Olympic Village to motivate the athletes during their competition. You can find more information when you click here

All artwork needs to be received by the Australian Olympic Committee by Friday 10th of December.

Zoom Paralympic Experience

On Wednesday 20th October, the Year 5s and 6s gathered together online, to listen to four Australian Paralympians experiences and journeys. The athletes were Heath Davidson, Jarred Clifford, Lakeisha Patterson and Paige Greco. They spoke about their troubles growing up, and what they had to go through. They wanted to be accepted for who they are, and what they did. Their stories were honest and they also tried to talk about experiences we could relate to. Promoting awareness was on their radar of things that they would like to do, as in making people aware of the troubles and rough times they went through as a child and in their early life. The major theme for the day was inclusivity. This is something that we can all relate to all aspects of life.

Jarryd explained that he got accepted through playing sports, which was where he found his passion. He told a story about knowing that with his vision impairment he knew that he would not be an opening batsman for Australia. Many people with disabilities struggle to find the perfect sport that they enjoy and are good at, let alone be able to play. Sport helps many people with a disability have a better outlook on life. People with a disability looking to play sports are quite restricted with the sports that are available. All four of them explained that they want to be role models and idols for the next generation of people with a disability.

A few of them shared their stories of representing the Green and Gold, and how it changed them as a person, and also changed their whole mindset. As they said, sport has changed them as a person, mentally and physically. This has helped them to develop and be a better person and gain confidence. Overall it was a great experience for us to hear from the people that we did and helped us to have a different mindset about their lives as well as millions of others with disabilities. We thank them for spending time with us and appreciate it, thank you.
