Numbers and Fairytales
Prep
The students have been consolidating their knowledge of numbers through two well known fairy tales.
These are ‘I Tre Porcellini’ and ‘Le sette caprette’. The students listened to the story of the Three Little Pigs (I Tre Porcellini) and were asked to sequence the story using the numbers 1-5 in words in Italian. The students were encouraged to use correct letter formation to reinforce what is being taught in the classroom.
This week they are making a six sided dice that they will use in a game to practice the language they learnt from the story. The students are also practicing their cutting and pasting skills and are doing a great job.
Junior Learning Community
The students are consolidating and extending their knowledge of numbers and making the connection between numbers and the real world.
At present they are learning the correct terms in Italian for the four operations of mathematics (piu’, meno, diviso, per). The Year one students are using a 6 sided dice to create simple addition sums and are writing the equations and the answer in words.
The Year two students are using the dice to create addition, subtraction and multiplication equations to practice their arithmetic and their times tables in Italian. These dice games help to strengthen the students' number recognition ability and work towards improving their mental addition and subtraction skills.
Middle Learning Community
The students are currently working on extending their knowledge of numbers from 1-100 and beyond. They are using their prior knowledge of numbers in words from one to twenty and numbers counting in tens to 100 to enable them to use the numbers up to 999 in various oral and written activities.
They have learnt the names of the four operations of mathematics in Italian (piu’, meno, diviso, per) and are using these to work out mathematical equations and give the solution in Italian.
In the coming weeks they will learn to tell the time on the hour, half hour, quarter hour and five minute intervals. The students will create a PowerPoint presentation (pictures and sentences in Italian) showing what a typical day in their life looks like.
Senior Learning Community
The children are practicing using numbers 1-1000 and beyond. They have learnt the names of the four operations of mathematics in Italian (piu’, menu, diviso, per) and are using these to work out mathematical equations. They have enjoyed playing a game called ‘Indovina il numero’.
The game helps the students improve their problem solving and strategic thinking skills while expanding their memory capacity of numbers. Next week the students will read short texts involving numbers and will use their comprehension skills to answer questions based on the text.
