Year 9 Central Market Excursion

On Tuesday 4 December, Year 9 Geography and Food Technology students attended an excursion to the Central Market. Students spent the morning exploring the various stalls and businesses, completing set tasks related to their specific subject area and becoming familiar with the range of multi-cultural cuisines available at the market. For Geography students, this involved mapping how far specific food items had travelled to connect with the classroom learning about food security. Food Technology students completed a specific task which had them building a recipe using local ingredients after finding them from specific stalls. They then purchased these ingredients to cook with back at the College.

Lutheran College Captains Day

On Tuesday 5 December, Concordia College hosted the annual ‘Lutheran Captains Day’. The day was designed to gather students appointed School Captain from various Lutheran schools and help each of them to settle into their role as leaders. The day began with a particularly special devotion about service by College Principal, Mr Saegenschnitter. We then participated in many activities that aimed to build our communication and team skills. It was a great opportunity to converse with Captains from other schools who like us were just settling into their role as leaders. We were able to discuss the difficulties we have had in our role and were able to give each other advice about how to deal with it. It was a warm and welcoming experience that we felt improved us and put us into the right mindset to serve our College and community in 2018.

Year 9 Japanese Excursion

On Monday 27 November both Year 9 Japanese classes went to the city to explore and experience some parts of Japanese culture first hand. We were blessed with excellent weather, and students enjoyed this purposeful learning. We commend the students for the positive way in which they represented the College on the day, and their willingness to participate in all activities. Thanks also go to Mr Wilhelm and Mr John for accompanying us on the day.

The Japanese excursion that we had was a fantastic experience. We went to the Himeji Gardens first where we learnt a little about the history of Himeji Gardens and the meaning behind everything in the garden.

After that we had some free time where we got to wander around the Adelaide Central Market area and buy Japanese goodies. It was a fun little shopping experience.

We had lunch at the Japanese restaurant ‘Pepper Lunch’ after our shopping trip and we filled up the whole restaurant. The food there was amazing and very filling. The day ended with a blast by partying at the karaoke place where we sang or shouted our hearts out! The excursion was exciting and fun!

Year 9 German Excursion

On Monday 27 November, the Year 9 German students travelled to the Barossa Valley on an excursion. We split into our two class groups and explored one of two activities before switching during the day. One activity was touring Luhr’s Cottage, a traditional and unaltered cottage from the original German settlers. The cottage was quite small with a cellar, kitchen, bedrooms and shared space. There were a lot of little artefacts from the early settlers including, dolls, glass bottles, tools and baby clothes. Everyone was interested and curious about the cottage and belongings as we wondered what it would have been like to live there in the early German settlement of South Australia.

The second activity was a traditional German Bowling game called Kegel. It was held at the last existing Kegel club. Kegel is a 9-pin bowling game where you bowl down 40 metres (the size of a church) and try to get as many points as possible with many rules on how to get more points. The two students with the best points in both classes were Abbie Cork-Gorringe and Blake Hutchins scoring 35 and 36 points. Everyone found this very fun and we were all really supportive of each other.

Nearing the end of the day the two classes joined once again as we travelled to the Whispering Wall for lunch. We were treated to traditional German style pretzels and cakes from the local bakery. After finishing the delicious treats, we all went to discover the walls abilities to carry a whisper from one side to the other. We were all amazed as we also enjoyed the glorious scenery.  In the end we all had fun learning about the traditional German culture in the region and spending time with one another.
