Top tips for a healthy head-space

A new school year can prompt a range of emotional responses. You might feel excited, sad, anxious, or happy. Here are just a few ideas to help you look after your mental health while you get back into the rhythm and routine of the school year.

  1. Get some sleep. Sleep is good for your brain and body, and helps you feel energised, stay focused and protect your mental health. 8 to 10 hours works best for most people.
  2. Eat well. Eating well can improve your mood, energy levels and general health and wellbeing. Fill up on good food (like veggies, fruit and whole grains) and drink plenty of water to give your body and brain all the power it needs to function well.
  3. Stay active. Keeping fit and staying active can help you to sleep better, manage stress and boost your mood. Walk or take the stairs when you can, do some morning stretches, ride your bike instead of catching the bus, or find a sport or physical activity that you enjoy and make a plan to do it regularly.
  4. Connect. Feeling connected to others is an essential part of being human. So spending time with friends, family (including pets) and people in your community can really strengthen your mental health and wellbeing.
