Assistant Principals' Report

Absence from College

For students to learn most effectively and achieve their potential in Year 11 and 12 they need to attend classes. Attendance is monitored at each lesson to ensure that students meet the minimum attendance as required by the College and the VCAA. As outlined in the College Attendance, Achievement and Promotion Policy, students must not have more than FOUR classes of Unapproved Absence per semester in any subject.

Attendance is taken each lesson at the College. Parents or guardians are expected to phone the College on the morning of the absence to explain any unforeseen student absence (9361 0000). While students are expected to attend all lessons, there are, of course, going to be times when it is not possible. An absence from any class is considered an ‘unapproved absence’ except in the following circumstances where an exemption may be granted, and an ‘approved absence’ may be possible.

  • A medical certificate regarding the period of absence
  • A statutory declaration may be used only to approve absence due to illness for a single day. It must be provided to the school on the day following the absence.
  • The student is required to attend a school acknowledged activity or excursion.
  • The parent/guardian has discussed with the Cluster Coordinator, Director or Assistant/Deputy Principal the special circumstances that prevent attendance (Eg. Family tragedy).

Extended Absence

Parents and guardians are advised to delay any extended holidays or travel during the final two years of schooling as this has the potential to cause significant disruption to studies. Should a student require an extended period of time away from the College, an application should be made in writing and submitted to the Cluster Coordinator. Please include relevant information outlining the expected duration of the absence and the reasons for the absence. Any supporting documentation (Eg. A letter from a sporting club outlining the student’s commitments at representative level) should also be supplied.  Please note that family holidays or reunions will not be an approved absence.

The application will be taken under review and you will be notified in writing if the absence, or part thereof, has been approved. It will be the responsibility of the student to catch up on any missed work.

Please contact the relevant Cluster Coordinator if you would like to discuss any attendance concerns you may have for your daughter or son.

Catholic Regional College Sydenham Dress Code

Attention to detail and physical appearance help to promote a sense of self-worth. Catholic Regional College is a community, and the wearing of our College uniform should be done so with pride, with all benefiting from this common reputation.

Full school uniform, including the College blazer, is to be worn by students to and from the College and on all excursions. It is also required to be worn to all scheduled exams.

The full physical education uniform may be worn to and from the College when students have practical physical education classes. On certain occasions theatre study students will be required to wear their Physical Education uniforms. VET students will also be required to wear their designated uniform.

Compliance with the wearing of the College uniform is expected of all students. To allow some to vary the dress code at will is to create a situation of injustice for the majority who comply willingly with the stated dress code.

If there is a legitimate reason that the College uniform cannot be worn, a note from a parent or guardian is required. Students need to speak directly to their Cluster Coordinator, providing a note outlining the reasons for being out of uniform.

Currently, students should be wearing their Summer Uniform (worn terms 1 and 4 only).
