LIBRARY NEWS

This Week in the Library

It’s hard to believe it’s week 7 already, but here we are. We've had another busy week in the library and welcomed Mrs Cathy Lane who filled in for Mrs Dolbel on Monday morning. She enjoyed learning how the library works and the students of 3/4D, 3/4W & 1/2W made her feel very welcome.

This week K-2 are learning how the picture books and easy fiction are organised in the library and using alphabetical order to return books to the correct position. They’ve also been imagining if they wrote a book, where would we find it in the library. To support this theme, they have been reading ‘Alligators in an Anorak’ by Daron Parton and using the first letter of their last name to write another page of their story.

After the success of Stage 2 reading the first few chapters of ‘Fish Boy’ by Kylie Howarth last week, I’ve decided to keep going as everyone loved learning the ‘kid fish facts’ found within the story. We had lots of fun pronouncing (or trying to) the scientific name of the sea cucumber, isostichopus fuscus and wondered how they functioned with no brain? This week we read along and learnt information about the Galapagos Shark & jellyfish. Did you know that the tentacles of a box jellyfish can be over 10 foot long, that they’re 95% water and have no brain either? I think I’m learning as much as our students!

Stage 3 are concluding our look at Oliver, the library program and it was exciting to see that 5/6PW didn’t need ANY help to logon and remember their passwords yesterday, this was a major feat from where we started! They were able to refine their searches and look for specific information, next week it all comes together when they will actually go and find a resource on the shelf.

We have also changed our book displays this week and celebrated Dr Seuss’ birthday and International Women’s Day - there are so many great books to acknowledge these special days and our students have been enjoying borrowing these.

Thank you to the families who have already placed their order through the online Scholastic LOOP orders, we really appreciate your help participating with this system. If you've forgotten to send your order in today, the online system will remain open until later tonight.  For secondary students who are interested in ordering online, please select your class as ‘Secondary’. BOOK CLUB ORDERS CLOSE TONIGHT, TUESDAY, 10 MARCH 2020, so please ensure you have your order in by then. It usually takes up to two weeks from this date before we receive the order and distribute them to classes. Thanks again for your support of this great program for our library.

Premier's Reading Challenge 2020

The PRC began last week and notes have gone home to register for the challenge. Any students who have participated before, your username and password remain the same, and I will register any new students once they return their note. All participating students will receive a letter with their password information over the next few days. Don’t forget for book lists and rules, visit the PRC website at:

The Library is a Busy Place

Forget the days of the library being a quiet place for only the readers, the last week has shown what a diverse range of people use our space each week. Check out photos of the secondary chess trials with Mr Koch, the singers and musicians preparing for last Friday’s mass with Mrs Marshall and the lunchtime primary crew that enjoy spending time in here each day. This is THE place to be.

Super Reader of the Week!

Year 8 student, Toby, is our Super Reader of the Week, he borrowed and read all 2485 pages of our thickest book in the library - The Complete Works of William Shakespeare. Wow! His pick of them all? The Tempest.
