Magis report

Our new Year 7 Option students have completed their introduction to the course. Students have been exploring the concept of Magis (a Latin word that means "more" or "greater") and what it means to be a Magis student at John XXIII College. Students are busy working on their first task - setting goals and determining what will be their recipe for success in Semester 2. A warm welcome to our new Magis cohort!

Our Junior da Vinci Teams competed yesterday in the 2022 da Vinci Decathlon Tournament held at UWA. The da Vinci Decathlon is an academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of school students. Our students competed in teams across ten disciplines: engineering, mathematics, code breaking, art and poetry, science, English, ideation, creative producers, cartography and legacy. I commend our Year 7 and 8 teams on an outstanding effort. It was a great day and a wonderful opportunity for our Magis students to interact with like-minded students from other WA schools. Congratulations to our Year 8 team who were awarded third place for Creative Producers and first place for the Legacy challenge. Special thanks to Ms Gray for her assistance at the competition.

Entries for the 2022 College Creative Writing Competition closed last Friday. There have been many entries this year and I commend all students who took part. Over the next three weeks, a selection of Secondary School Staff will read through the entries to determine a Junior and Senior School Winner. The English Department are providing a further opportunity for students to demonstrate their creative talents in the 2022 Eileen Thompson Memorial Poetry Competition. The theme for this year’s competition is: 'Reflecting on the past'. For further details please click on the link below. Entries are due Monday 29 August.

Next week, we have meetings for Mock Trials and Creative Edge. We have the Bell Shakespeare Company performing a play for our Junior Magis students and the College Shakespeare Club. We have the heats for the FameLab Academy competition and on Friday some of our Magis students will be heading off to Point Walter for our annual Magis Camp. What a week it will be!
