Amazing STEM opportunity!

After achieving a great result in the annual Big Science competition, Eva Bailey was selected to attend a STEM program. It was an incredible opportunity. Here's Eva's story:

At the end of last year and the first half of this year I participated in a program called Curious Minds, which is a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and maths) program for girls in year 9 and 10 that lasts for 6 months. This program is run Australia wide to encourage and excite young girls to take up a career in STEM. At the start of the program, I participated in what they call a summer camp, which is a hands-on camp over zoom. During this camp I worked through different areas of STEM with professionals and other girls my age as I learnt what a career would look like in physics, chemistry, biology, and maths. Before the camp I was sent a box full of materials so I could participate in hands on activities. For example, in the physics session I learnt how to make a motor, speaker and a battery out of a few items that they sent me before the camp. I also did a range of other activities so I could get to know the other girls on the camp. After the camp was finished, I was paired with what they call a STEM coach who is a woman in STEM. I was also given a task to investigate and create a presentation on anything related to STEM that I was interested in. So, my STEM coach and I met up over zoom about once a month to investigate and create my presentation. My STEM coach is super nice and was so helpful in helping me with my presentation. We also did a range of other activities such as researching other women in science and possible careers for me, also just got to know each other.

I ended up doing my presentation on the numbers of players in different sports and how they changed over the years. But some presentations were why the pink lake changed colour and what soil does basil grow best in. We all presented our presentation at what they call the winter camp, which was again over zoom. We also researched more areas of STEM such as technology, engineering, and earth sciences. Again, when we researched these, we had materials given to participate in experiments and other activities. All in all, I learnt so much and met so many people all over Australia who are also passionate about STEM.

Storm Hits Cornerstone College

The storm we had last term saw the Cornerstone community in action. A large section of the roof of the Year 2 classroom was damaged with the strong winds and the College went into lockdown to keep everyone safe. I want to thank the staff and parents for working together so we were able to send our students home safely and smoothly. The SES and some of our parents from other emergency services worked to secure damaged sections of buildings and to make the area safe.

SWPSA Cross Country - Primary

Thursday 29th July was the Primary Inter-school Cross Country.

These students showed great sportsmanship, resilience, perseverance and teamwork. It was their character that shone through on this challenging Cross Country course. We are super proud of them!

Footy Clinic

The Primary School learned some football skills during Footy Clinics run by the WA football commission. It was great to see their skills improving week to week.

Year 7 Science - God's Creation

Mr Meyer walked into the Science Lab and was amazed at how Mrs Lucas and Mr Cleaver were getting our Year 7 students to engage with God’s Creation.

There was wonder in their eyes as they saw the perfection in the most microscopic detail.

BIG Science - Student Awards

Each year Students are given the opportunity to participate in the Big Science test.

Congratulations to our students who received certificates and vouchers for their efforts.

Volunteer Fire Fighters - Our Kindy Students

The Volunteer Fire Fighters Troy Hawkins and Valerie Griffiths visited our Kindy students

to talk to the children about their work as volunteer fire fighters. They showed us a fire engine and talked about the equipment they use in different emergencies.

Our Kindy students got dressed up as fire fighters and practiced using the fire hose. They also enjoyed viewing inside the fire truck. We are very thankful to our volunteers.

Science Week - Glass-More than Meets the Eye

It was a great Science Week and this year's theme was "Glass-More than meets the eye!"

Thanks to Mrs Lucas and our fantastic parent helpers our primary students were amazed by the science of glass … mind blowing!

Year 6 Camp

During week 7, the Year 6’s went on an amazing camp in the Dwellingup area. In our different tribes we took part in activities including raft building, archery tag, mountain biking, team building games, orienteering, cubby building, forest ecology and a commando course. We even had a night walk where our teachers and instructors “abandoned” us in the bush while it was pitch black, definitely getting a kick out of scaring us! After our big days of activities, we would have dinner, followed by Mark, Simon and Tash leading us in wonderful, fun filled sessions discovering truths in the Bible. On the last night of camp we all sat around the campfire, where the leaders shared their faith journeys with us and gave us a chance to commit our lives to Christ. Overall, it was a fun and exciting experience, where we were pushed out of our comfort zones, discovered the importance of working as a team and learnt about Christ’s love for us.

Open Night

The annual open night at the Busselton campus was another successful showcase of what happens at Cornerstone. What an amazing night!
