Kitchen Garden

It has been a busy week in the kitchen and garden with both the year 3s and year 4s participating in the program. The year 3s on Tuesday made healthy pumpkin carrot sultana muffins using the pumpkin grown by Lara and Kiara. They also made zucchini slice with varying degrees of success!! The zucchini slice was very nice and well received by the students, but the pumpkin muffins were less appealing - perhaps a little too much pumpkin we think!

In the garden we made self watering planters with repurposed plastic bottles. The students understood the wicking system where water contained in a reservoir travels up the wick to the soil to keep the plant moist. A great option for keeping plants watered while you are away.

The year 4 students from 4SD made their own pizzas today using pita bread bases and choosing and preparing their own toppings. We were fortunate enough to have a lovely day weather wise so these were enjoyed on the rocks outside the outdoor kitchen.

Our garden activity involved creating Potato Cylinder Towers where we planted seed potatoes using a tower system. Many hands were on deck for this task, involving fashioning the chicken wire into a cylinder, hammering garden stakes into the ground to support the structure, then layering it with straw, soil and compost and of course the seed potatoes. After adding water, it is now time to wait and continue to water it, and see the growth in the weeks ahead.

National Tree Planting Day

Last Sunday was National Tree Planting Day. Trees are so important to our very survival and wellbeing. Our school will this week receive a generous donation from our local Scoresby Bunnings store of 30 Australian native plants that we will plant around our school with the year 4s next Thursday.  Watch this space for photos and words from our students.
