Junior School

'He will yet fill your mouth with laughter, and your lips with shouting.'

Job 8:21

Our Junior School has been filled with fun and laughter this week. Primary School children are such a joy and I'm grateful to God to have them all around me in my working week.

One of the things that they have been very excited about is their gymnastics lesson at the Warrnambool Gymnastics Centre. It has been wonderful to see the smiles on the children’s faces as they anticipate riding a school bus and then as they demonstrated the fun activities afterwards. You will find photos of this below and in the Sport section of this Newsletter.

Junior School assembly time is another source of great joy for teachers and students alike. Our crazy Minute to Win It house competition is always a highlight, along with the class item. This week, with an auditorium full of cheering friends, some students slithered across stage, pushing a sweet potato with their nose! Laughter absolutely filled our mouths and our lips were filled will shouting! The Year 3 students also performed their song beautifully.

I love sharing special extracurricular achievements with you. Last night, Opera Australia put on a performance of The Barber of Seville at the Lighthouse Theatre. It was an amazing show. The performance included a children’s choir with local children for some of the songs. Junior School students Max, Eli and Miriam participated and did themselves (and us) proud! Well done Eli, Mim and Max! Audience members were given some moustaches to wear. You might see some staff you know in the photos! If your child has made the most of an opportunity like this, please send me an email as we’d love to celebrate it.

Prep

The Prep students had so much fun at gymnastics this week. Here is what some of them said when asked "What did you think about Gymnastics Monday? What was your favourite part?"

"Good. Going on the rope"
Mahalia

"I thought it was good. I thought it was nice. My favourite bit was when we climbed up the rope"
Chloe

"Pretty good. The part where we did somersaults"
Jack

"I liked the swinging. I liked everything"
Isla

Year 1

This week in our Science lesson, the Year 1 'Change Detectives', explored the properties of spaghetti. The students were given a task to use raw spaghetti to create a tower. The next part of the challenge was to explain why raw spaghetti was more suitable to use than cooked spaghetti!

Here are some thoughts from a few of the students:

"When it was too hard and it seemed it was impossible to stand the tower up we needed to lean it against something or have a friend to help us"
Eleanor

"I was going to make a cube but it was really hard so I made a pyramid. It was easier to make the triangle shape because they all came together"
Mossy

"I tried my best to make a square but it kept falling down"
Alyra

"It was really hard to make the cube because it kept falling over on one side"
Peter

"I was thinking to make something but it wasn’t standing up well enough so I thought I would make a triangle that had a swinging marshmallow that was hanging down"
Joey

"I made an Eiffel Tower and then I helped my friend by holding his tower while he was building it"
Loretta

"I was trying to make a cube. I eventually finished it but then it just broke"
Ethan

Year 2

The Year 2 children had a tricky code to crack when they came back to school this term. With many guesses and teamwork, they were able to reveal a special message. It was with great excitement that Mrs Ballinger announced that she is having a baby! Great cheers were heard, with many suggestions of baby names. It was a very special memory for Mrs Ballinger and her Year 2 class.

Year 3

The Year 3 students have been utilising the Library space and Mrs Neild's assistance to sing and practice their dance moves for their Assembly item this week. Together we're learning to 'Give a Little Kindness'!

Year 4

It has been a great start to the second half of the year. The Year 4 students have started producing some incredible pieces of writing and working hard on fractions in numeracy.  However the most exciting thing has been heading off to Gymnastics with Miss Stephen on Tuesday afternoons. Thank you to Miss Stephen for making this possible, everyone is loving it.

Year 5

Term 3 is an exciting term for Year 5 as they investigate our Solar System. Students this week began creating planets using papier mache which they will paint to resemble each of the planets.

Food Technology

Year 6 students have started Food Technology this semester. Last week their focus was on learning how to use a knife safely to chop up fruit for a fruit sundae and how to clean up the kitchen. This week they made mini Quiches.

Science

This week Science was extra tasty. Year 6 students cut into Mars Bars and rubbed them together in different directions to create a mini earthquake, exploring plate tectonics. The chocolate layer on top represents the earth's crust and the caramel is the earth's mantle. Students looked at transform, convergent and divergent boundaries. It was a tasty experiment.

Prep Buddies

The word of the week for Prep is 'hand'. Year 6 students helped the Preps create some superhero hands in their buddy sessions.
