Teaching and Learning

Around the world this year Melbourne has had one of the longest and strictest lockdowns and as a school system we have learnt many lessons. From a variety of feedback, a valuable learning that was evident at Concord was the importance of connection; between colleagues, students and their families. Teams across the school have been supporting students to re-establish positive relationships and have kept these as a priority when planning for 2021.

Within the impacts of remote and flexible learning, the Department of Education has provided schools with some additional funding to implement a context based Tutor Learning Initiative. Even with the very best of efforts in 2020, there will be some students who were not able to engage fully in the remote learning program and this initiative is designed to support these students whose learning has been disrupted. Teachers will use their assessments along with their knowledge of students to make recommendations for 2021. More information on the intervention model for Concord School will become finalised early in Term 1, 2021.

The Discovery Centre would be one of my favourite places to visit within the school. The innovation and creativity that goes into designing these spaces is pretty incredible! This area of the school compliments the integrated programs that occur in classes whilst also providing an advanced space for Digital Technology and Science to run their programs. Currently the M.I.L.E (Multi-sensory, Interactive, Learning, Environment) room is set up as the Artic inspired by The Polar Express a Christmas narrative.  The engagement levels are always high when students are exploring this space!

People make a place, and this is why I personally found remote learning difficult, I missed interacting face to face with people each day. During my first Term at Concord, I’ve noticed that the community make coming to work each day enjoyable! From students, staff and now face to face with parents I’ve been met with warm welcomes and a common purpose to provide the best opportunities for our students.

I wish everyone a safe and relaxing holiday, and I look forward to seeing familiar and new faces in 2021.
