Classroom News - Year 1

Learning in Year 1

In Religion we are learning about Advent and Christmas. We changed our prayer table cloth to purple and are preparing and waiting for Jesus' birth. Year 1 have also been opening 'Random Acts of Kindness' letters on our Advent Calendar.

In English, we are revising and consolidating spelling rules, tricky words, and writing super sentences. This week is our last week of Big Write and it has been wonderful seeing the students develop and progress with their writing skills.

In Maths, we looked at number patterns and we are currently revising fractions. Students enjoyed making their own number patterns and getting other students to guess and describe their patterns.

In Science, we are learning that energy comes in different forms. Last week we investigated where light comes from. This week we are investigating where sound comes from and how is it made.

In Dance, we are learning to move our body in different ways within our space. In groups we learnt to create, follow, repeat and alter movement sequences in response to rhythm. We enjoyed watching each group's creation of a 'Bubble Dance' movement.

We were fortunate last week to be part of the Beach to Bush visit which is an initiative designed to teach primary aged children about beach and water safety from a group of volunteer lifesavers. We learnt about sun safety, rips and waves, sea creatures, basic first aid, rescues and how to get help from a lifeguard. We really enjoyed learning about all the dangerous creatures at the beach and how to signal for help when we are in the water in time for our summer holidays.

Celebration of our learning and hard work.

Home Readers and Big Talk

This week sees the end of us sending readers home with students. Could you please ensure that your child returns all the home readers to school. Children have been introduced to many nline reading resources this year so please try to keep your child reading over the holidays. This will consolidate the learning that has taken place in class.

We will complete our last Big Write this week. Once we have all the students work collated into their folders we will send home the Big Writes that have been completed this year. Happy reading! We are so proud of the progress students have made.
