Young Leaders at Parliament House

On a chilly evening on Tuesday 22 May, accompanied by two of the college captains, Meg Wagner and Katelyn Connolly, we attended Parliament House, where we were received by members of both the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council.

The students were invited as school captains and joined other leaders from schools in the Eastern Metropolitan Region. They were surrounded by other young people in leadership roles and were presented with the opportunity to talk to Mount Waverley MP Michael Gidley and president of the Legislative Council Bruce Atkinson. They were then addressed by all members who were present on the night, reminding them that as leaders they have the potential to make a difference.

We were then given a tour around Parliament House by Michael Gidley, where we were fortunate enough to witness the Legislative Assembly in session.

It was a chance for the established leaders in our communities to recognise the young leaders of our community and to come together to celebrate the possibilities of leadership in the future.

Australia’s Biggest Morning tea

Last Tuesday the SRC hosted Australia’s Biggest Morning tea. Many students volunteered to bake delicious treats to sell at lunchtime. A special mention must got to Ms Bulbul’s Food and Technology class as they baked delicious orange cakes with orange syrup, as well as Marianne Danilis, year 9, who baked and decorated a beautiful vanilla mudcake which was sold for $40. Overall, a fantastic total of $670 was raised. All proceeds will be donated to the Cancer Council to support the work they do in providing assistance for people living with cancer, their families and carers, from financial and legal assistance to counselling services.

Year 12 Business Management Excursion

On Thursday May 24, the Year 12 Business Management students visited the Port of Melbourne to see Operations Management in action.

As part of operations, students need to gain an understanding of how a service organisation such as the Port of Melbourne manages their inputs, processes and outputs and how they maximise their operations. This can be difficult to conceptualise (especially in comparison to a manufacturing business) which made the excursion very beneficial for the students.

We started in a classroom setting with delivery of course content and were then taken on a bus tour of the Port in action. This was a highlight. The students asked some very insightful questions and walked away with a much better understanding of Operations Management.

TLC Water Expo

After weeks of careful planning and preparation, our Year 7's participated in the annual TLC Water Expo on Wednesday May 30. Students spent time in class and at home crafting proposals, drafting inquiry questions, researching their water-related issues and turning their newfound geographical knowledge into interactive Water Expo stalls. Students integrated their Science water assessment task into their display alongside their posters, models, activities and quizzes.

Many thanks go to the TLC staff who worked tirelessly with their students in preparation and on the day. We also appreciate the Brentwood staff and older students who came to visit. We thank the parents who were able to attend and spent time examining the stalls, providing valuable feedback, as well as those who helped build models at home and proofread quizzes! Finally, congratulations to the TLC students themselves for their concerted efforts, teamwork and enthusiasm on the day.

Brentwood ‘Recycled Textbooks’

Brentwood has recently donated 200+ old textbooks to ‘Recycled Textbooks’. We are glad that those old textbooks were rescued from going into a bin and are being reused in our community.

The Green Team would like to thank all parents, staff and students who donated old textbooks to us and supported this campaign. We would also like to thank our library staff who were very supportive in organising the collection box and managing the collection of textbooks during the campaign period.

We are not collecting any old textbooks at the moment. Please visit ‘Recycled Textbooks’ website (https://www.recycledtextbooks.com.au/) and contact them directly if you would like to donate any old textbooks.
