CHPS Sustainability

Year 2 Bin Sort
As part of the Year Integrated Inquiry Unit, War on Waste, students conducted an audit of the rubbish that the playground bins were composed of.
The students compared categories of Soft plastic, Hard (rigid) plastic, Compostable, Paper and Other and will no doubt have the opportunity to apply their previously acquired graphing skills with our school’s rubbish data.
CHPS Sustainability Team Update
The newly formed Sustainability Team has been working hard to implement the following changes:
• Introduction of a Rubbish-Free Lunchbox Challenge, encouraging students to bring rubbish-free lunches to school whenever possible: This has had a noticeable impact on the cleanliness of our yards!
• Review of the canteen’s menu to look at ways to reduce waste produced
• Review of the efficiency of School’s solar panels
• Introduction of a compost bin, whereby each classroom will be able to compost fruit and
vegetable waste and this will then be used on gardens around the school
• A student Green Team initiative has been re-commenced, comprising of volunteer students who undertake various gardening activities around the school, such as weeding and planting every Monday lunch time
• The purchase of new planter boxes to establish student-run garden beds
The team will continue to investigate ways to improve our school’s sustainability practices.
